My previous explanation was confusing and possibly wrong.
Both legato and portamento mean several notes are bowed in a single continuous motion. In legato however, the fingering hand does not slide from note to note. So it's a continuous "sound" changing pitch instantly whereas portamento changes the pitch gradually. Hope that makes sense..
