SP1200 (or SP12) by itself

i never have to remove or turn down the sp output while sampling, it is inherent for there to be no output while samplng. that is whyyou have to monitor it through a different source when sampling. if you get overload and the sampling threshold is not going above half way there is a glitch or bug. try to stick with what works, if it is inconsistent, you'll pull you hair out.

maybe your aint got it... mine has a crazy distortive noise comin out when in samplin mode...a couple others one i seen do it too... it can really fuck your samplin up... it aint a big deal to just turn the ouput off... depending how your set up and monitorin...

I havent done it a mad lot, so im not sure yet, but i think i only get "sample is good" when i tun the volume the whole way down and when i set the sample time real low. If i try to sample for 1.2 seconds it always says overload. So the problem wit mine is the volume and the sample time. I aint feelin this as much as i thought i was. Im gonna work a lot with it before i decide its takin up space, but im havin problems with it right now, and i havent been succesful on any beats with it yet.

Helix how are you doing in using th eps? Are you using its sequencer or a software sequencer. What discoveries, tips, or tricks have you found? Have you gotten to try midi-ing the eps and sp? Your posts have prompted me to explore new possibilties with my machines. By the way I had the EPS way before Id even heard of Alchemist, but man I am amazed at how he uses the ensoniq sequencer to create soundscapes. I never use the eps for drums, and I wont, because of the sp but Ifiend for Alchemist production tips.

I use the eps's sequencer. I used it before i heard of als equipment too. I did midi the eps and the sp together like you said, doin the drums on the sp and usin the eps's sequencer. It was good, but i really not feelin it as much as i thought.

Ill pm you some of my beats done completely on the eps16+ later, but i gotta leave right now.

about sampling transfering, anybody using midi sample dumping or SD vintage software on their SP12(00) ? Instead of fucking with them dinosaur floppies ?

Call me a dinosaur, I just have a ton of floppies. I found cases of dsdd's in different places, i think i've only purchased one box since ive owned the sp1200 (1996), I have about 500 disks that I share between the sp 1200 and the eps-16+. I really need to connect a zip drive to the eps, cause I have too many instruments that take two disks. I have the zip drive, I just need to look into how to connect it to the ps, I've heard that it is buggy, not as smooth of an ordeal as an asr. If you know anything about it tell me.

The disks don't bother me for the sp1200 since the samples are so short, I only wish I had another one, but for me the eps/sp1200 combo gives me the three things I want: punch, grit, and versatility. Like I said earlier I never us eps for drums, and I use eps for melody, and either for bass (depending on sound and length) so its like having a band.
Another thing Ill do is sample a drum loop that I created in the sp1200 into the eps, then i can apply fx, I can play them simultaneously via midi and adjust the tracks related volumes for wet/dry effects.

I dont use sound dumping, I but I use the eps to control notes on the sp1200, through poly mode. Have you found sound dump to be better? For me creating a track on the keyboard that uses sp sounds is more beneficial because the sp1200 allows me to change the pitches of the sounds on the fly using pitch keys. I don't think sound dumping does, you only get what is given. The only downside is that the midi track is quiter than if i played the sounds on sp, not much but it is noticeable, so I have to decrease my other tracks to compensate.

I was actually implying to the use of recycle...it does sample dumping...transmit and receive...just in case you like to spice up the samples...you know...wavelab, soundforge they do that too. So if you got like a kit od samples you can set up a batch process of vst dynamics and edit all stuff in one go, then sample dump the shiznit...that's like the second best next to scsi for a vintage sampler...disks die anyway and zip has this tick of death so you really want to make a back up of that zip all the time.

I just hate disks hehe, like a paperless office I like a floppyless studio.

I own all of those three software packages that you mentioned, but I dont use them to sound dump. I record a song live into a sorry pc with an external sound card usb, I use at this time sounforge to record. Ill then chopit into pieces, further eq, process, and effect the recording. Then I burn it usually 4 or 5 at a time to cd, and take it to my hi fi studio in the other room with real monitors and better acoustics. There I resequence and mix down. I just got Ableton live 2.) and I want to experiment with it and my hardware samplers. I imagine once I learn it I won't use reason, soundforge, or wavelab anymore. When you said SD were you meaning compact flash?

no, its a software utility to load and send samples to sp1200/sp12/EIII etc... the emu old skoolers. SD was a pc based utility unlike the others were for ancient macs.

YO IM FROM 16 from ny and im very interested in making beats,I got a little dr. groove 202,but I like sample beats like Pete Rock type beats. I just wanna kmow if the SP 1200 would be good 4 me to start wit or the MPC 2000, I jus need 1 that aint that confusing and i can actually make the track that im feeling at the mment
