i got this sampler cause it was low budget stand alone hardware, and Im pleased with it. Just a small box to grab samples off my tables, in cd quality, and I use it for background beats to scratch to, you know?
but I want to start composing songs via software. While the SP303 can import wav/aiff files ( via smart emdia card) it exports them as files with the extension ".spo". I cant open or edit them in my wav editing software. I've scoured the net for answers, to no avail.
So after y'all break my balls for not having an MPC, maybe you can help me out.

Hey,

Not everyone can afford to get an MPC, make the SP303 your bitch until it dies, then when you get and MPC you'll be that much better with it.

It sounds like the 303 is exporting the files in a proprietary format that only it (and Roland) knows how to read. You could try opening the file as a RAW/PCM file in a wave editor, then manually tell it what the channels, sample rate and bit depth are to see if it bypasses the header and interprets the PCM data correctly, but I'll bet it won't work.

If the file is compressed, you will most certainly have problems because the codec probably only exists on the machine.

Another option would be to see if Roland has made a conversion utility program which allows you to load an spo file into it and write out a normal WAV file. There may be other information in the spo file such as keymapping and velocity switching which cannot be translated (WAV files are just audio), so you may have to get something which will extract the audio data instead.

Why not give Roland a call? I've called them with issues before, most of the time they've been able to answer my question, I'm sure this is a pretty common question with a simple answer.

Take care,

Nick

woo allright man, i guess i gotta holla at hapless help desk, but we all know it was gonna come down to that. i just had that optimism that somewhere is another broke cracka like myself who hacked the 303. i just like being able to grab a sample and play with a bit before cranking up the pc.

i appreciate the response.
