The bottom line is:

Whatever makes good sounding music no matter what it is as long as it works good for you and you feel comfortable with it is best. All software is contained in hardware all hardware uses software unless you are playing a gtr. Record companies do not care as long as you can sell units.

once the final product is done these days it's almost impossible for the cd or track to have not gone through both software and hardware...
