Man i dont know what happend, but this weekend, our album is getting mass downloads on the net (its popping up everywhere). Our myspace page hits spiked,We were like hmmm.. whats going on, so i put a google tracker on our name and album title... MAn our shit started popping up everywhere.. first 500 downloads from a russian forum, then 300 from a german forum, then it spread over here to the states, the album has popped up over 2 dozen blog sites each with hundreds of downloads.. then its jumped to china and japan blog sites.

here is what i think

The good.
Our name is getting out there. All these underground forums and blogs are buzzing. And now i can honestly say we are offically part of the "underground circut" Almost all the feedback about out album on these forums has been postive. So the smashbrothers are offically on the map.

The bad..
Man.. we aint got no lable to support us. We dont have the infastructure to book our own tour and recoup the money. In the long term it devaules our music. It kinda sucks to put almost 2 years of hardwork into something and they see chinese and russian teenagers downloaded today and forget about it tommrrow....

I guess it just comes with the territory right?

your thoughts..

First I wanna say congratulations on getting your work heard, although it's mass bootlegged, like you said some good comes.

But yea, i'm sure it hurts that all that hard work ya'll did is just being had for free, but in contrast to that, you are getting your name out there. Although your music is underground, it has more of a half mainstream, half underground sound to it, that might give chances to get snatched up by a label or maybe get some spins (being as it has somewhat of a mainstream vibe to it). I'm no industry expert, but since you don't have the proper means of promotion, bootleggers might be the best thing for you right now.

Good luck and I hope your shit pops off because ya'll got off your asses and made some moves to put out some music, it should pay off somehow, whether it's money or something else valuable to you. What goes around comes around.

This is the opportunity to take advantage and possibly release a re-vamped
version with a few new tracks and market and sell it but do not let it leak
to the net ... Target these new fans include some extra and try to get those sales.

That or let this album be the one to continue to build your buzz as it leaks
and spreads and follow up with something even stronger but again try to
not let it leak and don't upload it ... Focus on hardsale copies or digital copies
and dead the links within a quick period of time after it is purchased.

I tried to dead the links but it just keeps on popping up somewhere else i gave up, becasue the album is avaible digitally it only takes one person to cop it and start sharing, again like others have said its a blessing and a curse.. I just hope we can get some offical press so we can start doing more shows.. we got a hell of a live show...

Welcome to the digital age.
CDs just arent the shit anymore unfortunately and this kind of behavior is inevitable.
Understandably your angry because your not seeing any revenue from all this pirating but this also how a lot of great groups have started in the last 8 yrs.
If anything i would welcome the spins because you obviously need them...and like DJ Nice said, this is an ideal time to boost more interest by having another offering on the table.
I would just try to consolidate how its distributed and what it is....Maybe an EP rather then a Mixtape or an LP and dont put it on any digital circuits where people can cop it and share it (At least immediately)...Instead offer it as an exclusive CD to anybody that purchases the Smash Brothers album. Fuck even number em and announce theirs only like 100 of them!? Something along those lines anyways....
I would just roll with something like this:

Or hell hit up Nice, he might still be doing the dupes??

ohh thats easy, you can put a track it in google, if you have a gmail account there is a thing called google tracker, which will let you know if anybody in the world Searches on terms that you enter, from there you can see all the links to the album.. its free and under options

Yes.. sometimes if something is hard to find.. i try to support though but i aint gonna lie i download, i actually went to a forum that had our album posted for downloads and told them the same thing... Below is what i said...

Poetic justice i guess?

sup people my name is classicbeatz and im a producer based in brooklyn.. Im part of a hip hop duo called the smash brothers.. I found this forum becasue apparently our album (fear factor)was leaked on the net and this was one of the sources... Orginally i was gonna pitch a fit, but i came here, took a look around and realised this place aint so bad so i joined instead..

Im still a lil salty about the album being leaked but ohh well, I cant lie and say I dont download shit.. but its crazy when it happens do you.. i basiclly used food stamps and gas money to get the album mixed/mastered. So to see it up for free.. well.. ill take the L(for now)U can see what i said in the download thread...

your thoughts..

You are being publicized at a mass amount without paying a cent. That's great. I see your point in the bad as in the loss of possible profit, all the work put into your album. All in all my opinion would be that the record labels are collapsing as it is. They have been manipulated by the downloading community for years now with MAJOR artists that have had Major money invested. Not saying your money is not as important cause we all got bills, but the majors is honestly losing its grip on the music industry and are struggling to stay above water. Take this as a shed of light. Your music is being spread around the world at a high fucking rate. You need to Service mark your name and trademark it out of the states before it gets out of hand. If people in Germany and China are already downloading your music that means your making a national name.

Look into an indie and show them what you have and get even more publicity.

I am sorry this happened and can honestly say it sucks. I hope things turn out for the best.

(ASCAP) is a non-profit performance rights organization that protects its members' musical copyrights by monitoring public performances of their music, whether via a broadcast or live performance, and compensating them accordingly. They cant really do anything about downloading. If for say a radio station got a hold of the album and played it without permission then they would step in.

Dope - You guys are getting some hype around the globe.

Sux - You aren't getting compensated. Every album jacked is like 7 to 10 bucks out of your pocket.

Maybe you'll get enough of a buzz that a major label will pick you guys up?

yea... ull need more than 500 to get noticed by a major.... but u guys are in BK... wassup with just doin ur own lil Tri State tour right now?... there's 1000s of clubs to go to...try to use this slight buzz to ur advantage, and get in ur car or take the train to some shows... see if u can set up something at Fat Beats... ur gonna hafta sell them joints urself at open mics and contests... just remember, 500-1000 is nothin, there's millions out there... but i do feel ur pain.

damn yall, it definately has its good and bad...

on a side not, how did you put a track on the name and album title?
i think ur talkin bout puttin the name on the trk on the cd... there are cd burners that give u that option of naming the trx and the whole cd b4 u finalize it (i have the Tascam cd-rw 402 that comes with a computer keyboard input for that reason) ... also, u can name ur mp3 files by goin into "properties" (right click on the mouse), click on the "summary" tab and changing it that way.

oh yea... i 4got to mention... b4 u get SUPER huge, if u havent already, find out about ur name... Nintendo mite not be havin it.:q:
