Shaq deal finalized; O'Neal now a member of the Miami Heat

MIAMI (AP) -- The telephone connection was lousy, with static drowning out Shaquille O'Neal's voice. Still, the message came through clearly enough: He expects to win with the Miami Heat.

The Heat and Lakers finalized one of the most landscape-altering trades in NBA history Wednesday, O'Neal going to Miami in exchange for Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Brian Grant and a first-round draft pick.

``I wanted to go to another contender, and Miami is definitely another contender,'' O'Neal said. ``We're just going to grow together.''

Grow? At 7-foot-1 and 340 pounds, O'Neal has long been the most formidable force in the game. Even in Los Angeles, a city of celebrities, he was a towering presence while leading the team to three NBA titles during his eight seasons there.

``It's certainly a disappointing day in a lot of ways in Los Angeles. I can't deny that,'' general manager Mitch Kupchak said. ``He's had an impact in so many ways on the franchise and the city of Los Angeles.''

In stark contrast to the downcast mood in Los Angeles, which was fueled in part by lingering uncertainty over whether Kobe Bryant will also leave the Lakers, the sensation in Miami was diametrically different.

``We feel that we have traded for the best player in the NBA,'' Heat president Pat Riley said.

The deal had been on the verge of completion since Saturday, when O'Neal met in Orlando with Riley. NBA attorneys approved it hours after the league's two-week moratorium on player movement ended.

O'Neal immediately transforms a franchise that has reached the conference finals only once in its 16-year history into a potential title contender. The Heat won one playoff series in the past four years and went 42-40 last season.

``I never imagined that we would acquire Shaquille O'Neal,'' guard Eddie Jones said. ``It's once-in-a-lifetime trying to get a player like this guy. It's an unbelievable, unbelievable move.''

At 32, O'Neal is coming off a season in which he averaged a career-low 21.5 points. He has missed 15 games each of the past three seasons with foot and leg injuries, but he's an 11-time All-Star with career averages of 27.1 points, 12.1 rebounds and 2.6 blocks moving to a conference where there's a dearth of dominating centers.

``I've always said that wherever he is, that's where the balance of power is,'' Indiana Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said.

The trade marks a return to Florida for O'Neal, who began his NBA career in 1992 with Orlando and still has a home there. He led the Magic to the finals in 1995, signed with the Lakers as a free agent in 1996 and helped them win three NBA titles.

``You can't replace a Shaquille O'Neal, period,'' Kupchak said. ``That's not our intention. This move, as bold as it was, was necessary.''

Days after Los Angeles lost this year's championship series to Detroit, O'Neal demanded to be traded, weary of feuding with Kobe Bryant and feeling disrespected by owner Jerry Buss.

He's under contract for $27.7 million this coming season and $30.6 million in 2005-06. Riley said he expects to negotiate an extension, and O'Neal said he anticipates playing another five or six years.

``We feel like Shaquille is going to be a part of this organization for a long time,'' Riley said.

For the Lakers, the most significant acquisition in the deal is the versatile Odom, coming off the best season in his five-year NBA career. He and Butler were considered cornerstones in the Heat's recent rebuilding effort, while Grant is a 10-year veteran.

``It's a bold move to get younger and change our style of play,'' Kupchak said.

With the departure of three starters, Riley will build his team around O'Neal, Olympian Dwyane Wade and Jones, Miami's leading scorer each of the last four seasons. The Heat will now shop for help at both forward positions and backup point guard, and free agents will likely consider Miami a more appealing option with the addition of O'Neal.

``Everybody wants to be here now,'' said Jones, who played with O'Neal in Los Angeles from 1996 to 1998.

Each player involved in the trade must pass a physical before joining his new team. O'Neal's first appearance in South Florida is expected to be Tuesday, the Heat said.

He instantly becomes Miami's highest-profile athlete, and Heat ticket sales have been brisk this week.

``Over at the business office of the AmericanAirlines Arena, it's like being on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange right now,'' Riley said. ``It's absolutely a frenzy.''

O'Neal is moving from one city enthralled by celebrities to another. But there are a lot more of them in Los Angeles than in Miami, and O'Neal is likely to become the biggest thing on South Beach.

``There's a lot of excitement going around in the city,'' Heat guard Rasual Butler said. ``They call Shaquille O'Neal `Big Daddy' for a reason -- because everything he does is big. And it's big news that he's coming here.''

Through the static on the telephone line, O'Neal agreed.

Said Shaq: ``I look forward to making Miami a media mecca.''

the heat got the worse end of it. when shaq is 35, 36 and possibly already gone or severely declined, kobe and odom will be entering the prime of their respective careers. people are seriously sleeping on odom. he's going to be on that KG level befre to long... just watch and see. mind yuo, while grant is a throw in, his money will come off the books- at the same time freeing up 13 million dollars in cap space, which makes hom a very valuable trade commodity starting the year before that deal expires. teams will be willing to trade away established veterans and role players for the eventual cap relief. say what you want abuot the lakers size.... odom can defend all of the 4 spots out west and hold his own. there arent exactly great centers in th league, so i dont know what everyone is tripping on. mark my words- hte lakers will still be a top 5 squad in the west next year if kobe reups.

Agree totally, The Heat they gave up some young players with future potential, Shaq can still dominate a game though when he gets ready, that's the key, MJ, Magic, K, they played hard everynight no matter what, I hope the Heat send SKIP TO MY LOU back to AND1 he sucks in the NBA!!

The trade is good for the NBA. Now it's kinda sorta even between the two conferences. Plus, I wouldn't count Shaq out just yet. What if he actually got in shape this off season? He could be a problem......

you said that it would balance out the conferences, yet the east won the championship

Sure the east won the conferance, but how many strong eastern conferance teams are there?

Detroit
Indiana
New Jersey(before the Keyon Martin trade)
New Orleans(aren't they going to be west coast next year?)

VS
Sacramento
San Antoino
Dallas
Denver(beastin' next year)
Houston
Minnesota
Utah/Memphis(sleepers)

The west is still the better conference, and the Shaq trade could be the beginings of that balance of power shifting back to the east. Well, that Shaq trade, the houston/orlando trade, and hopefully Vince Carter going to NY.....

well the best team out of the east beat the best team out of the west.. that's all that matters, in my opinion

point being: no one's gonna remember those other teams in twenty years.. just who won the championship

we arent talking about 20 years down the line. it was about how trading shaq evens things out a little more as far as the conferences go. the fact remains that the east is the weaker conference- out west you have 8 teams who could legitimately get 45-50 wins this year. the east? 3. thats it. anyone else is gravy.

the point of "balance out the two conference" means that the overall conference will be stronger. no one is talking about 20 years down the line.

if, in your opinion, all that matters is that the best team in the east beat the best team in the west, then thats fine. that has no bearing on the REALITY of what the trade does in making the east more competetive.

you are really talking apples and oranges here.

"overall conference" power in favor of the west? yet the east won?

i see what you are trying to say, and you have some valid points. but the fact of the matter is.. our current champion is from the east. our current champion DOMINATED the best team from the west.

I don't care what's happening in the NBA as long as Steven A. Smith is the one telling me. I have never been more entertained by a commentator before from any sport. Barkley used to be my favorite right next to Michael Irvin but I haven't seen anyone spit them facts out and talk that sh*t like Smith.

I don't agree with him a lot of the times but he backs up everything he thinks and says with some legit facts and angles.

^^^Hahahahah!

I was gonna mention that but I didn't think anyone else would remember that! That was the same episode where he gave props to Greg Anthony for slamming everyone on the Laker's squad outside of Shaq. The question was something like "who needs to show up and and give the Lakers that edge they need to get over the Pistons and Greg Anthony was like "everybody needs to show up, Shaq is the only one even playing." And Smith busted out with "DAMN Greg, I didn't even want to have to say it. I can't believe you took it there."

Man...I was dyn! They were talking to him about the Shaq trade and I guess to try and throw him off, they threw in a stat question and he nailed it without even flinching. How many games did the Lakers win. He spit out the answer almost before the question was finished....
