very good article. Producers often like to cling to their "babies" till the time they think they will hit it big. I have been guilty of that many a times. But like the article said, in the future your skills increase and them old beats would not be as hot anymore. So better to not let the tracks just sit on your computer, do some shit with it. Either sell them, or place them on a project free, with an artist you like.

Yes, go back check the threads, I have dropped this exact science on more than a few ocassions but cats were not hearing me, been selling beats out in my area since around 99 and probably have made more than 10 g's easily off small time mixtapes, good to see an actual articl about it and the difference between if you are selling beats and hustling them between just waiting around caressing them with the hopes you might get a placement and then suddenly your beat is not timeless, a lot of my joints were sold off the break or done for a purpose even the ones people go huh what the fu** lOL....anyhow this is a good read and a good way to voice this info most of the cats getting a placement know someone or been very lucky but hey most of the major shit out now is trash anyhow or some weak emcee is over the beat .

^^ i agree .. i been sayin all these same things for a minute now too but its good to get it in an organized article.... bottom line u cant hold on to them shits 4eva .. gotta do something wit em... beats get old quick .. what is ur golden beat right now might be a throwaway in 2 months so get ur grind on... and the other thing I would add to what has been said is to Keep a LARGE catalog of beats ready. if u only got a couple joints u should buildup ur catalog ... or be able to make a beat on the spot ... have alot of material ready and available because u never know what kinda flava an artist is looking for at the particluar time. That beat u made 3 years ago in 5 minutes messing around with some presets might be just what an artist was looking for (speaking from personal experience)

I been workin with StepChild since like 97 so its def a unit at this point.
I dont charge him but I can never get any extra beats to sell either because he's on em as soon as Im like "hey heres a new.." lol

Oh BTw these articles are really, really good , props to Fade and the staff, I like them because they are relevant to the game especially producers that actually have artists or contact with the local scene, you gotta think about your own goals and strategies, not what someone else may perceive, because with business its the innovators and standout product that might get your music to the next level without even having a major placement or waiting for that phone call or email back about your beats.

I've been clinging on to my shit sometimes too... but as I work with more artists and be more open bout working with em i get more offers too.

Plus myspace is the shit when it comes to connecting and hustling your beats. It stimulates me to work harder cus you get more props and more requests for beats..

I liked the article a lot. My problem is finding people to sell to. I know they're out there, but I'm in the middle of CT and it's hard. I just want a connection to an artist with a name.. Anyone have one haha... Apparently the internet is a great tool to use when finding connections. Apparently one of the greatest producers who (I talked to an artist of his) said he started out selling beat 100 a pop then just kept doubling the price.. but get this... the beats were so hot the artists were willing to pay!! But boy how times have changed finding ways to distribute your music!
