Other than the fact that there are tons of old vinyls and they're cheep, whats the advantage of sampling with vinyls as opposed to just downloading songs off the internet and choppin em up in CEP or something.

sampling wax is all about "digging"
fuck using samples that other cunts have thrashed. its all about finding a gem on an old dusty record that noone knows about. most of this outdated sampling material probably wouldnt be available on the internet for download (cos its too shit for anyone to want it).
so the first advantage is that you will find samples which noone else has used before.
secondly, sampling from wax gives you the raw feel in the sample. sometimes vynil crackle adds to the realness of the sound.
thirdly, if you are a dj, sampling from wax will also allow you to scratch the samples you find as opposed to only being able to program the sound in to your beat.
and btw. downloading a whole song is a waste of time. when your sampling, your looking for portions of solo instruments. so having vynil allows you to skip through to the starts and ends and other quieter parts of the music to find your solo samples

if you are just downloading then you have to have what you want already in mind.
personally i like to grab a stack of records, i have no clue whats on them, i listen to them all back to front. i get exposed to tons of music. learn from that music and find new things that i enjoy listening too. I mean its part of the tradition. and for any music lover its a great experiance.
Lots of unexpected things happen when you use wax too. small sounds. slight speed inreases and decreases. you can slow your turntable down or speed it up with out having to use any type of digital pitch shift.
Plus records have a true analog sound. it is the exact sound that was recorded, not a digital representation of that sound.

actually in response to messenger you could scratch with the mp3 if you have final scratch or you put it onto a cd and scratch with cd tables. i don't know what the difference in quality is. like if you can reproduce all the scratches faithfully with a cd or final scratch setup. but whatever. digging in any way is enjoyable to an extent. whether you're in an old record shop or digging thru websites. just find what you need and make a dope beat.

OK seriously, it depends on the quality that was used to upload the music, if the upload is a high quality one, your ear will never know the difference, plus, how good of a sample do you need if you've got other loops or instruments playing at the same time?

i think that with vinyl you find all kinds of shit that no one would evr have put up oin the internet. somebody said tradition, i agree, i don't want to go to some sit that every producer has been on and get some mp3's, i wanna hit the garage sales gets some records off gramps and start diggin. respect the roots

i dont think theres any difference vinyl is more traditional but theres still tonnes of samples to be found on the net too

I think sampling with just downloads is ok. I do that sometimes (legal way). But i'd rather go find a yardsale or goodwill. If i dont, i feel like im being lazy.
Two reasons why I dont sample from mp3's:
1. Mp3's sound quality is poorer than the sound quality on vinyl or cd. Thats the reason why mp3 files are so much smaller than waves, they're compressed. Try downloading a song that you already got on a cd, burn it to cd and compare.
2. I sample but still, when you're sampling, as i see it, you're stealing other people's work. When you download their music from the internet you're also stealing. So at least have the dignity in you to buy the music before you steal it, or else, you're double-stealing

well put. cuz when you are downloading music for samples. the chances of u downloading noone has heard is impossible. bcuz u ARE downloading it from someone else. and it's kinda hard to come across a rare break u have never heard yourself if u are typing the title in searching for it.
