Lemme ask you all a question. When sampling say an old record or anything for that matter, What do you listen for? And how will that influence the beat you are composing. Also, How does one go about chopping up samples? What sounds do you know what to listen for to end the chop of a sample to make some Serious beats? get at me

i listen for any sound which is solo (no more than one sound at a time)

when chopping i sometimes chop it into each beat of the sample. so the sample starts on beat 1 and i chop at beat 2, 3, 5 etc. but it depends on the sample most of the time

yeh depends on the sample. personally i tend to stay away from samples with beats, and also generally stay away from the more uptempo samples. but i always check every tune all the way thru anyway coz you never know when a tune could switch u know.

usually i just look for nice strings or guitar samples, or pianos and shit, sometimes i take some nice sounding vocals and chop it up in a melodic pattern, that usually sounds nice deep as a background effect. it depends what you have to work with, just about anythin from a tune can be sampleable really :D

the important thing is to listen critically... i listened to a cher record front and back on about 20 different occassions..sayin' to myself damn, "ain't nothing worth sampling on this shit?"...then one day i listened to one of the tracks all the way through without skimming like i usually do, and bam... the loop just jumped out at me.."toot-toot-doot-doot-dut-dut-dah-dah"
that simple 3sec was kinda fast... so i pitched to 33-1/2... -10% ....blam.... that shit had a westcoast vibe to it.... dre would kill to have that piece....... since it was pretty even..... i chopped it into 4 pieces....sometimes i chop into 2 or maybe even 8...based on what i feel is best for the beat....

lace the drums....rehearse the sample chops ..while the drums are playing.... then i record the sample in....copy different pieces of the sample onto a different pad....slap some filters, etc... to create some fills for the beat....... then creativity moves on from there....


for me the sample has to be at least 1 bar long and loopable...

sometimes I just sample and start cutting it up into small pieces and than decide if I use it or not.
there is no rule for sampling.
just start and see where it takes you.

im pretty good at finding samples, it take's me no longer than 1 minute recording it and putting it into kontakt for use. if you cant come up with anything u like within a half minute then throw the sample out, if you have a ear you can imagine how the sample will soudn when changing pitch adn tune ect...

theres so many ways to flip a sample, tuning creates a whole new sound, running it through filters and envelopes to. i'll usually map it across a few keys to start with

however i feel thats the way i make my track, so if im happy ill turn a dark sample into a happy sample ect... samples dictate my mood though.

the asr 10 does, cause alchemist used some filtering when i was listening to his beats he done on that.
