Not just Puffy, that's been going on since the beginning -- listen to the originals of MC Hammer - "Can't Touch this," (Rick James - "Superfreak"); Vanilla Ice - "Ice Ice Baby," (Queen - "Under Pressure"), and The Sugarhill Gang - "Rapper's Delight" (Sorry, don't remember the original's name off the top of my head).

There's hardly any flipping in any of those tracks, each is very close to the original.

But, yes, artists like DJ Shadow, Premo and RJD2 are a lot more creative with their sample use.

As sampling artists, we all should ask that question of ourselves: if we're jacking someone else's hard work and calling it our own, what kind of right do we have to get mad at other people who do the same to us? If you're upset by someone sampling your material, perhaps you should move to using 100% original beats yourself then?
