i guess it depends on your approach. I tried sampling before and i actually was pretty good at it but i dont get the same pleasure as if i make a beat from scratch

I mostly sample (cuz i cant afford synths and shit) but ive never just takin a loop from a track. I tried it, but it feels like your not doin anything.

If i didnt care about respect and skill, i would do what Kanye did, but i do care about skill and respect so i hafto chop shit up and be original.

I just listened to pieces. Alchemist sampled that. He didnt do a whole lot. He still makes his version 10 times better and he got mad hot beats, but he really didnt change much.

Im havin trouble acceptin this.

I'm not surprised and never will have any problem with it, that is why Hip-Hop producing is the natural extension of DJing. Everyone knows the original MCs just ryhmed over the breaks section of two copies of a record spun together; so, what is the problem with people still doing that as long as it sounds good. To me producing is partially being a music archeoligist, others approach it differently but I'll always say that no matter how it is done, I don't care as long as it sounds good... Not to make this another sampling or not thread, cuz I got love for all Dope producers...

so wrong and uneducated. yes there alot of loop and drum producers, but that IS NOT WHAT SAMPLED HIP HOP IS!!!! are you listening in the showcase? are you listening to RJD2, alchemist, dj shadow, peanut butter wolf, joey beats, el-p, dj krush, dj scratch, the roots, jay dee, madlib? i can go on. all producers who sample that don't straight loop and add drums. go listen to hip hop and learn and then come back and see who's the moron. 1. education, 2. emulation, 3. practice, 4. mastery: these are the steps to where you want to be. no one appreciates you calling anyone morons around here. especially when you've proven to be the biggest of them all.

I only go back and listen to the original track sometimes. Like Cam'rons "Hey Ma", then the Commodores "Easy". They flipped that a lot. And like you said, DJ Premier flips shit up real good. I just never really heard that many loops. I know some people do it. But i didnt know that many.

I agree, I think it is a good way to learn too. When you see what others have done to a sample it is easier to teach yourself techniques and to think about how you would do thing differently...
What I think is even more fun is to accidentally dig the same record and then go "oh that is where it is from." That is personally more fun for me than to go out investigating who certain producers, that I like, sampled. To me it seems more like you are trying too hard to emulate someone else's style then, rather than develop your own style, but with certain influences. Just my humble opinion though...

Looping

The sample loops can be sooo tight if the sample is obscure, bumpin, and fits with the context of the song(i.e. subject matter of the rhyme, or mood of the music) For me the key questions I think about before sampling loops are: has it been done before? How can I vary the groove? Will the beat be dope? Usually if I am not happy with the answers to any of these three I won't sample that groove. With that said sampling and looping is the foundation of hip hop and alot of the most famous beats are interpolations of other well known songs. The key is to stay ahead of the game as far as digging and sequencing
