Sampling did not begin with the rap 'geniuses' of the 90s like P.Diddy and Will Smith. Oh no. Forms of 'sampling' (ie: quoting, allusions) have been used in literature and in music since the dawn of man. In the 50s and 60s, for example, Chuck Berry's distinctive guitar playing was 'sampled' by The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and more. The Beach Boys & John Lennon even got sued cos of it. In the 70s, George Harrison was sued for unintentionally sampling the Chiffons "He's So Fine" when he wrote "My Sweet Lord" (smooth move). So yeah, it's not a new thing, Puffy. When rap and hip hop emerged in the later part of the 20th century, disco proved to be the main source of sampling. Rap's first big breakout, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang took the entire song "Good Times" by Chic (which was a #1 hit in 1979, btw) and just rapped different lyrics to it.

Kool and the Gang, James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, and many disco and soul artists found their songs sampled by these new pioneers. And some didn't like it. Biz Markie, 2 Live Crew, haha, even Vanilla Ice were sued for using samples. Don't mess with Queen and David Bowie, cracker.

Soon enough, the artists being sampled realized that damn, they could make a lot of money if rappers sampled their songs. In the mid-90s, sampling in rap flourished, mainly due to the fact that some of these old geezer's needed money, and they didn't turn down any offers to be sampled. Without the interference from the artists, rappers started sampling like crazy....but sacrificing major dough for the perfect sample. Some examples:

-Puff Daddy got NO MONEY in publishing for "I'll Be Missing You", Sting got 100%
-Warren G got 50% of the royalties for "Regulate", Michael McDonald got 50%

In the late 90s, sampling was out of control due to Puffy and Will Smith who even fucking sampled THE CLASH. That's just WRONG. But sampling just doesn't want to go away, man. The funny thing is, most people nowadays don't even know when a song samples an old one. Take J.Lo's recent hit, I'm Gonna Be Alright". It samples Club Nouveau's "Why You Treat Me So Bad". Most of her teenage fans probably don't remember that song, and they seem to have forgotten when JESSICA SIMPSON AND P DIDDY also sampled that song in the PAST FOUR YEARS. Jesus.

*-Many songs in the past forty years have been modled/borrowed from Chuck Berry's guitar style including "Brown Sugar" (Rolling Stones), "Jumpin Jack Flash" (Stones), "Come Together" (Beatles), "Katmandu" (Bob Seger), "Back in the USSR" (Beatles), and "Fun, Fun, Fun" (Beach Boys). So I guess you can say that 'sampling' has been going on since the birth of Rock and Roll!
