All you cats hating on music theory etc saying its not nesscary.. EAT MY
SHORTS.
You here him mention the importants of composition and music theory in all aspects of music. You hear how he said it helpled him progress as an artist. This is coming from the father of sample based east coast grimey music.

I told you so...

Yeah but Class I really dont know who said its not necessary though no one has ever really made a big deal of those 2 aspects, most of WU music is not highly orchestrated and composed like the way you like or you feel the hip hop should sound either though, its all sampled from highly orchestrated music in a lot instances (classical strings a lot) LOL except when he went off experimenting more in RECEnt years after Bobby digital ........all samplists I know of speak of composition and RUDIMENTAry theory not having to be a musician though, the requirement for being a good musician sort of falls along the lines of theory but....I know some musicians that know nothing of expounding on theories and chords to a high level that play their asses off and you would not know the difference...its a good start but I dont put a ton of weight on that being something one must know or go to school for etc........I really still dont buy into hip hop turning into another Genre...RZA music does not resemble in any way the compositions that you speak about so much though...now eat my shorts.....oh I know theory too Class I play....so who else could debate those points or dont think its not necessary ???.....RZA is no Jazzy Phae though thats for sure....he use his interpretations of theory and run with it....thats what everyone should do but every song does not have to be perfect n hip hop and follow some pretty structure to be HOT or to Please the emcee because the emcee is really the heart of hip hop music and why we have it in the first place....

has anyone else noticed that after wu tang forever, when rza started experimenting with all that shit, that wu tangsorta fell off. i was the biggest wu fan out there but since then the only good wu shit to come out is supreme clientel which went back to that old gimey style of beats. RZA needs to start diggin in the crates again and produce full albums for these guys again. everything between 36 chambers and forever was a classic in my eyes and i need some more of that shit... PLEASE!!! and what ever happened to red and meth ?? we need another blackout... juss leave hollywood alone for a minute... i aint hatin tho i loved the movie and as corney and the sit com was it was pretty funny

*sigh*
Your way too senstive man, i wasent even talking about you specifically,

There will always been different froms of hip hop, but right now hip hop is headed toward musicalitity, partly becasue alot of real musicans are getting into the game, and partly becasue sampling is becoming expensive.... Like it or not your gonna see more and more cats replaying sample like compositions instead of actually using the sample.... Im not saying that hip hop has to follow a stucture, u can make gritty east coast beats , as well as "pretty" composed beats with the right ear and musicans...

Most of the cats who resist this change are actually scared & threatend by it,
I said it once and ill say it again, if your have a musical ear you can make any type of hip hop beat... RZA is saying the same thing...

And didn't he say that he learned music theory when he started composing for movies? I didn't hear him say that it's necessary anywhere. If you'd ask him if he thinks it's necessary I'm 100% sure that he'd say NO. Because he made some of the biggest classics in hip-hop without it.

Also, the interview was great. Good post!

Of course music theory isn't neccesary but any knowledge about music helps. That's just common sense. But if you have a talent for making phat beatz that sound great already, then music theory, learning to play piano, etc., will only enhance your ability. Just because you learn something new doesn't mean it will ruin your existing style. You have to know when to use what you have learn to enchance the talent you already possess. My 2 cents!
