hey guys - this thread is a place to share any Reason Tips & Tricks that you may know or learn with each other with the goal of everybody learing this great program a little bit better (or a lot better!)

REASON TIP ONE - EASY MOVEMENT OF LEFT AND RIGHT LOOP POINT MARKERS

You can easily place the LEFT or RIGHT LOOP MARKER wherever you like by;

LEFT LOOP POINT MARKER - holding down CRTL and left clicking where you want it go

RIGHT LOOP POINT MARKER - holding down ALT and left clicking where you want it go

I'm not sure how I never knew of this before as I've only just found out about it! I hope it helps some of you :)

Route ALL drums channels to its own submixer.

If using the XT and the sound isnt loud or full enough yet, copy then paste the same sound inside the sampler as many times as needed to achieve a louder sound...this way your still getting the orignal quality before having to compress which does slightly color the sound.

that's a good idea about having a seperate mixer for the drum channels / Redrum... is that mainly good so you can adjust the individual drum levels easier or is there additional benifits too?

erm....use the scream to increase overall volumes on nn19s/dr.rex and such, by turning of the damage control and all the filters, and just jacking the volume switch up.....

Exactly! I just find it more flexible to my needs...Cuz that way, i have total control over every sound in any way i choose....My beats tend to have a lot of individual ideas, so to enforce them i need a really flexible way of altering every sound individually....This allows me to mix more clearly, as well as apply send effects to any channel i desire without effecting the rest....

Its a personal preference of course, but i believe that its very useful...

I also read this somewhere when talking about doing the same thing and the dude mentiones andvanced layering techniques AND intersting exporting options... does the below qoute make seem accurate to you homie?


I dont' know if this has been said, but hit the tab button make the tracks of redrum go into there own mixer channel, Yeah this takes up 10 mixer channels but now you can move into more advanced layering techniques. But the best part is that you can export each different track as a seprerate wav file for further processing.

Well the statement sounds true, but kinda uninformed. Hes got the principle down, but then he starts to confuse "mixing" capabilities with "layering" which are 2 diff things, but it sounds like hes got the idea alright.

As far as exporting as individual tracks, u can do that without routing each channel to a submixer by simply muting all other active signals that are unwanted when the time comes to export....

The s1 and s2 controls at the top of each channel on the redrum refer to send1 and Send2 on the mixer. That way you can apply effects to each piece of your kit. I guess routing the entire thing to its own mixer and applying sends there would do the same thing.

yep it basically does but should allow u up to 4 FX as the mixer has 4 AUX sends

To model dope basses - try the subtractor and use either a saw form or a sine wave.....use both oscilators and make the octave go down to about 2 or three, depending on what algorhthms you use....Then go over to the filter and use either the 12 or 24 lo-pass, and start fuckin with the frequency and the reso, eventually youl get a nice subby type bass thats pretty hittin in the car stereo.....Also try messin with the velocity parameters to give more ooph to the patch if needed.....Plus, theres no need for extra polyphony so jus make it 1.

I don't post here much but check out my tutoral on drums here, I wouldn't make a copy of the same drums over and over, but there's more than 1 way to skin a cat.

Also make a starting rack with all the effects you normally use like a RV7000 and Scream4 modules.

Get rid of all those refills you download from the net. Get the 1's that have the best hi qualty instuments that you can use and layer over and over and buy those. Get 1 good one for synths, keys, bass and strings.

Learn to use the combinator. take a patch that you like and add some funk to it. Add a few chorus and fitlers and delays and play with the CV routing. That is the same thing that the big 3(motif,fantom,triton) do with the large patches that sound so good the same thing can be done in reason if you take the time to learn it.

Get recyle. Chop up more than 1 session worth of stuff at a time, and take advantge of DR. rex and use 4-5-6 different samples in 1 songs. CHange the pitches of different sample to lock into the key of what you were using

Easy selection copy...

It's either ctrl or alt, but make a selection from score, press n hold alt while click n hold leftmouse and drag to new location.

I havent used it in a long time but I do work the same template.

Mixer(drums)
Chnl 1/9 - direct out from redrum
Chnl 10/13 - Rex(2x)
Chnl 14/16 - Return from auxes*
L/R - Chnl 1/2 on Main mixer.

* I dont usually use more than 2 fx, delay n reverb, other fx in reason are considered inserts. This way I can eq fx from the same "drum" mixer.

Compressor on every strip (that's 8 in total/2 per comp, but not on fx) chained between Instrument output and drumsmixer input.


Mixer(instruments)

Chnl 1/8 - 4xNN19
Chnl 9/10 - Mahlstrom
Chnl 11 - Subtractor
Chnl 12/15 Aux returns
L/R - Chnl 3/4 on Main mix.

Same here, compress the lot via inserts, except for Aux returns. If you add another insert make sure it's behind the comp in the signalchain.

Main Mixer

Well, basically you got 2 stereo tracks to master, divided from two mixes. So, considering 3.0 has a mastering suite I'd suggest this is the only place to use it. Dont add fx to the aux's or inserts, that unneccesary in this part of editing the track.

Save this as a template by overwriting the empty *. rsn file.


I know there more to add in the instrument mixer, but I havent used reason since 2.0 but it's the idea behind the concept. Just make sure your level are good on both drums and instrument mixers, meaning each mixer has a max output with peaking. The balance from the mix is made in the main mixer, where you use both suite setups to master both signals to make stuff blend and tweak out the master with a saturator and multiband compressor. I'd suggest to use a comp/lim/gate setup on the drum mixer's output (chnls 1/2 Main mix) and a comp only on the Instrument mixer output (Chnls 3/4).

You could also just leave the mix clear, so nothing on the 2 track master on the main mixer. Instead master the rendered 2 track in T-racks or Vintage Warmer like stuff.

He're another quick reason tip for those of us who can't play a bassline to save your life. When you got your samples all chopped up in recyle make 2 copies of them. make 1 with the bass cut and make 1 with the bass heavy. Now take your 1 without bass and freak it like your normally due add some chorus, scream4 and some reverb. now take that 4-8 bar loop and copy it to a new Dr rex. Use the low sample with that one and take a low pass filter and lower it down, then raise the resonace to about 5-10. Now have another scream 4 in the insert and play around with the distortion/tape/tube whatever you want. now you have a bassline, but don't stop there go back in and delete and add some notes to freak it. Do this with your drums to once you get them programmed to make them sound fuller.

So, you're blowing up the bass level to eat more headroom...

A bass is a precious thing to deal with,,, so handle with care...Especialy with reverbs (unless you eq the low out of it).

no reverb in the bassline this is just get get low end theroy(9th wonder, jay dee, you hear it on a lot of the songs in streets disple). Now basiclly you are taking the sample and filtering out the high and adding a little boost and distortion to the low. the comments about the reverb was for the main sample not the bass. Read again.

I know you can also split a signal now, you might wanna try using 2 comps on the bass with 2 different ratios (like a multiband). Same principle basically...1 signal path has the low frequency at a ratio 2:1, the 2nd signal path holds mid/high freq's at a ratio 7:1. Chain is source->split- 2x to comp, 2x to mixer. If possible try and use a HP filter on the mid/high signalpath instead of eq on the mixer, you'd place it in the chain before it enters the comp . Then you can add fx on the toplayer of the bass through the sends and eq them when routing the fx outputs to a channelstrip. I'd keep away the cabinet modelers from the low freq signalpath cuz it tends to get muddy and start spilling headroom.
