hey guys,

I'm basically in the process of learning Reason and I'm wondering what other cats on here use Dr Rex for and/or what it could potentially be used for in terms of hip-hop production...

holla!

I use it for frum breaks that ive sampled and for melodies and basslines etc ive sampled and cut up in recycle. It makes it easy to rearrange, also u can get the 'feel' of a drum loop and quantize everything to fit that 'feel' witch is pretty good.

Peace

exactly wat spin doctor said... if u have recycle its great.. chop your samples in that and load them straight into the dr rex

dope, I've mainly been using NNXT whever I sample somthing and cut it up in Recycle but I may consider trying Dr Drex.

Do you generally use use these samples in a loop type of format or do you turn them into something new and different?

eyez all hazy...

use recycle to chop up the sample. then, save it as a .rex file and load it onto rex in reason.

I understand how to do that, I'm just wondering what advantage I would get from doing that over loading the .rex samples into NNXT

it's a matter of preference really. i think it offers you more control. for example, if you load a .rex file in DRrex, you can change the pitch, tone, decay, pan, etc. of individual slices.

I personally (when i used Rex player) i would use the Dr rex just for one thing to Play the looped Sample then i would load the individual chops into the Nnxt Assign them to Seperate outs tweak them Layer them and go from there.. nnxt has alot more options asfar as Sampling goes because its a Sampler Dr rex is just a Loop player that allows u to use and Affect whatever is prechopped

Nug if u have a chat program like Msn or Yahho get pm your handle i can give you whole run down on things u can do with sampling with the nnxt unit that u cant with the drrex

nnxt can do all that for each individual slice.

I do both with it, but how you chop it up initially is the limiting factor i guess.

Is there any clear advantage to using the NNXT or is it just another way of doing the same thing?

control in what way, cos i thought most of the control came down to how you chopped it up

na man. after youve chopped your slices, you wanna fuck with them.

for the record, i mainly use the rex for taking advantage of the real sounding drums that i have in my rex refills.

and for a last ramble, the nnxt is quite inferior to samplers like kontakt and machfive. all the more reason to use a program with plug-in capabilities. thats where ive propellor headed.

true there are a few things mach five and Kontackt do that Nnxt doesn't... only huge thing Drawing the line is that Sample time Stretch and actually Seeing a Wav all the other(important) shit has a Work around..

not something like an envelope with with lots of breakpoints though.

depends what you classify as a need to make a track. im sure we could both make a track without a sampler all together. for me, flexible envelope is important....as is seeing the waveform and timestretch.

yeah ive got kontakt 2. why do you find kontakt 2 better than machfive? im waiting for machfive 2 to come out though as it looks better than kontakt 2. check it...

i think feature wise machfive seems pretty good but it is a little unstable and is less cpu economical.... i have in the past (before i stuffed up three times with challenge response in an installation) used only sonar and kontakt to make music and even a shitty celeron processor with minimal ram could handle 16 different channels of sounds (many maulti samples bass guitar strings etc. piano....) with different outs etc. i am now buying a new computer to use for kontakt via fx teleport (check this program out real cool !!)
kontakt does have all the features of machfive and more and the semi modular nature of effects routing in kontakt is very cool the only thing i found possibly better about machfive was it's browser and had a slightly bigger editing window (set loop points stanrt end etc.)
i'm with nnxt kontakt all the way but am very grateful for developers like motu for putting pressure on native instruments to step up there game for kontakt 2 (it wouldn't be what it is without machfive halion in my opinion never posed kontakt any threat)
i now use battery 2 and it is a fuckin dope drum sampler realy easy to layer sound nice adsr

oh yeh andon the dr rex thing even tho i have only used reason once or twice at mates places i will quote a chorus to a track i forget the name of

- what is it good for....
absolutely nothing !
