Hey so I want to get into DJ'ing but before spending a dime on anything I wanted to know what to buy.

Basically I plan on ONLY spinning from MP3's and either a Lacie or Laptop.

Anyhow what do you suggest I buy? I know since everything is digital nowadays do dj's even need turntables or can they ONLY dj from their laptop alone????

Anyhow I'm thinking about getting turntables and Serato. I don't really have the money for both but I wanted to know what is the best and MOST economical set up? Do I really need Serato or a similar program?

I was thinking about getting this all in one from Amazon. Is that a good buy???

Honestly, the most economical for you would be getting top quality DJ equipment, and not a starter kit like you linked. If you're planning on becoming serious about what you do, you're going to end up upgrading your mixer and set of tables for stuff that isn't shit in the future. Seriously though, go for good gear, you'll spend a lot more up front, but you'll never have to purchase any more equipment again (minus broken wiring, cartridges, whatever).

Check E-bay for second hand DJ gear, pawn shops are pretty good resources too. I found a working 1200 and Rane 52 mixer for dirt cheap once.

If you can't spend money, then go with Ableton Live. Haven't messed around with it at all, but I hear it's pretty for a live setup (although nowhere near as interactive and next-level as having turntables).

cosign...no sense in buying twice. get two tech 1200's off ebay and a used vestax 05 or 07 (that's the classic benchmark). get some old records and work on your mixing skills then get serato. trust me you won't regret it. i got a pair of shitty gemini tables and a horrible mixer and ended up upgrading to the ttx1's by numark and getting a rane mixer...the whole time thinking that i coulda saved and gotten them first.

also, i rock serato so as a user, i can say get it...it is as good as it looks.

I third that motion. before you jump out there like "I wanna DJ!!!", you need to get some fundamentals down first. Get a pair of 1200's (or cheaper direct drive turntables), a mixer, and some vinyl THEN step up to mp3 this and that.

Before y'all jump on me about the cheaper direct drives, know that I've been running my Gemini XL500mkII's for nearly 9 years now (but been spinning for 17 years). I can walk up to a pair of 12's with only one minor adjustment to make - the stop brake on the 500's is nearly immediate vs the slower brake on a 1200. Takes about a minute to get used to it, otherwise I'm tight.

BCD2000 ... I'm thinkin' about coppin' one myself to scratch stuff up

I still use Turntables and a majority of other DJ's I know do too. The only thing is that with new technology, we don't have to carry a bunch of crates to gigs anymore. All I bring now is my laptop and serato when I get gigs at clubs. Some clubs I dj'ed at already have a serato setup so all I gotta do is plug my laptop, needles, and serato records and im good to go. Most of the DJs I know all use Serato. I've only met one or two DJ's that uses final scratch but then they converted to serato lol.

That's 'cause Final Scratch is notorious for dying during your set. Some of my buddies with bigger names as DJ's have plenty of horror stories to tell about Final Scratch.

I been tryin to get back into Deejayin for amkinute, but it aint cheap. There's so many options now, when I was comin up it was technics or nuttin. Now you have so many to choose from. Personally, I plan on gettin some mp3 decks because the cost will be easier on the pocket. But it depends on what you plan on doin as well. I plan on usin em for production, but also do a few parties,,,nuttin like gettin the crowd goin from spinnin the right joint...

Fact: everyone who starts messing around with anything related to djing will definitely get hooked on it; it's addicting.

so ya definitely don't cheap out with your equipment and definitely do your reserach.

im using some denon3500s right now and they're sick as hell. never had any problems with them. and they offer product upgrades online adding new features to the denons soo yeaa, there better than turntables imo. but i've never messed around with serato that much so idk, but serato sounds pretty dope too; you'd never have to burn a cd again.
