i think protools is greatly overpriced. the software is in no way superior to othe rproducts on the market. in fact, many producers who use protools end up using Logic as their sequencer anyway because it shits on protool's sequencer. protool's power is in it's expensive ass hardware and imo one could buy a more customized hardware configuration and use the software tools of their choice. protool's popularity is in large part for the same reason a lot of things in our society are popular; they got the jump on the competition. I commend them for that. They were making hardware interfaces for computer based recording back when people were still running intel 386 based machines. But like a lot of products that have similar monopolies, they have gotten lazy and are reaping the benefits of being able to rest on laurals.
