Has anyone here ever produced Rock Music. I just have a few questions because I am starting to get into it and I feel like a newb all over again so here:

1. Is there really any major differences in Hip-Hop Production and Rock Music Production
2. Does Rock Music have adifferent Format than Hip-Hop music such as song structure Is it still like 16 bar verses 4 to 8 bar hooks bridges etc.
3. Can Rock Music be seuqueced like how I would make a Hip-Hop beat Drums and all
4. Would You Consider Gnarls Barkley Rock Music

Any Help would be great and please no negative comments I'm tryin to broadin my horizons

Yes, that is actually what I do best is rock! (I am a producer/engineer with lots of rock records under my belt, check my site for a few examples)I am still getting my hip hop chops up to snuff

ok question #1 YES! everything is different. I almost had to re-learn some things when I got serious about hip hop. For example in rock music the goal of a compressor is to not really be noticed just to do some nice smooth things with the instrument, I spend years learning how to do this properly but in hip hop you WANT to hear the sound of the compressor you want to hear it pumping.

Questions #2 for the most part song structure is about the same
#3 You can sequence rock songs, but they suck! I love the sound of a real drummer beating the shit out of his drums, I love hearing the guitars feedback again check my site for examples of this.
#4 No.

Hope that helps.

ive never "produced" rock music per say. But i made a rock beat not along ago, its on my myspace. i think thats the last rock will see off me lol, not that i hate it, i like rock infact but its quite a different ball game. live drums/guitar/bass are very important.

I've produced some rock music... and i don't even like rock, but i like music so yea..

Basically its the same structure like 4/4 and all that, but just like in hip hop, those things can change.

Drums, no i didn't do them the same. Instead of boom boom snap. I played the drums how a real drummer would play them and didn't try to make them stand out too much in the mix. and the rest is just the basic elements like guitar and bass, etc.

And on what dream said about the compressor, I actually try to do this properly in hip hop anyway, I dont wanna hear that shit over compressing lol, I try to make it as clean as possible in rock or hip hop, but it is possible that i give hip hop a lil more make up gain.

and no. Gnarls Barkley is not rock.

in my classess at berklee we actually looked at the differences between how compressors where used on Tom petty track vs an eminem, when it is actually pointed out in that way you can really hear it. Even on "lose yourself" They have compressor pumping away on about every track.

There's an amazingly produced rock/indie/electronic hybrid of a band called The Postal Service that I'm sure some of you have heard of. It's really some great stuff, and I'd love to do something like it.

"Never EVER let a rock engineer near your rap project, I know this from experience."

Not bad advice, however a good engineer should be able to rock any genre.

Well they dont, I blew an ass of che$$e in the late 80's thru the early 90's on studios who worked with pretty decent size artists that always sounded good loud in the studio and like shit as soon as I left.
Big inspiration to get my own gear.

thats a classic mistake to make ! its very easy to get a mix sounding pretty good at a loud volume through a real nice set of speakers in good studio but making a mix that will translate to everything !

as for producing rock music its a totally different thing, infact a rock producer is nothing like a hip hop producer at all ! a rock producer rarely ever creates the music or plays any of the instruments he just crafts the overall sound, a rock band is what creates the rock sound it doesnt work to well when sequenced!

Right on! Exactly!! I have lived with some bands and its a different thing entirely.
Its nice for them too because they dont need electricity to start playing...
The down side with bands that I saw was that its too many personalities, too many egos too many personal lives that effect the cohesiveness of the group.
Most bands really arent tryin to "make it", yet they make more than we do because they are playing covers weekly at clubs..
If nothin else Rock Still gets more billin than hiphop on anyday!!
