Does a producer have to be a dj first ???? Or is it better for a producer, to be a Dj also ?

i'd put the question the other way around.
it's better if a producer would be a collector first.
being a dj is really not that important in my eyes.
a real producer must know his craft, and that's why he has to be a record collector first. then he can produce and dj.

ofcourse a producer DOESNT have to be a dj first. they are two completely different things. production doesnt necessarily have to have ANYTHING to do with decks and a mixer.
being a dj aswell can sometimes help though. you can lay cuts on your beats and you have another element of creativeness when decks are involved. decks create all kinds of weird sounds. and you can sample from all the wax out there
but theres plenty of dope producers who dont dj. El-p comes to mind at the moment.

Being a dj is only a bonus if you're going to be sample happy but in order to be a producer you don't have to be a dj at all

LOL thats wild man! but i started off on the game on playstation called music generator like 4 years ago, and that had a sampler but i didnt really know about samplin so i jus started off thinkin that samplin was the "cheap way" of makin beats, now since i been on this site i see other wise...i dont know, if someone would show me how do do it rite and all that technical stuff i mite try it out, i mean shit, i know he aint d.j.in nowhere with that old ish anyway.

Well, if you wanna stay in line with the true origins of hip hop, it was built off of samples. Nowadays computerized producing is making the DJ extinct.
To answer your question, I think that being a DJ will definitely help your musical ear as far as what beats to choose and lining up vocals with tracks, but with today's technology, and producers like Neptunes and Swizz Beats blowing up while using a sample free style, you can just practice producing and be strrraight!

I've been a dj as long as i've been making beats, though the genres vary on both. I've been scratching for only 2 years with no drive at all except plain fun. I lack skills and dedication to become a turntablist, I've been to all dmc's in past 4 years which is actualy been demotivating to even compare myself. I've spunn a lot breaks n electronica for the sake of the dancefloor ( n chix ) only, nowadays I only spinn D&B ( since 96, completly since 99 ). Funny thing is that I seldom produce D&B, at least not as much as would like to, in this case productions are mainly hiphop based and commercialy based. Two different things with two different purposes and values, I can't care less about a rep as a dj, all producers in my opinion create music to make a statement, personal or not. I think, in the correct order it's beneficial to be a producer first, than a dj. I say this since I've met so many dj's that eventualy discover that in order to make it or expand creativity you want to make music too besides spinning it. Knowledge upon records is a must too, but you don't need to be a dj in order to find original sample material cq. diggin crates n 2nd stores. Sorta like R&D, for the love of the game and respect for the orignals. I found so many good records/music that after listening I wouldn't even dare to sample it.

i think they work hand in hand in some ways, like being a producer helps you dj because you learn to understand how bars work, and this helps with beats matching, also being a dj you are exposed to a lot of music which for some is inspring.
