When you lookin through the credits of somebodies album and it says produced by: Dr. Dre, for example. Does this mean Dr. Dre made the beat? Or does this just mean he organized everything and got everybody needed for the track (bckgrnd singers or whatever)? Or both?
Im not sure but i think (THINK) Dr. Dre produced "Stan" by: Eminem. But 45King made that beat.

My real question is, what is the definition of a producer.

Help me out.

normally the person who made the beat is listed as producer and the person who sets it all up is executive producer.but dr dre is an exception he takes credit for alot of peoples beats that aint his.Thats why alot of his camp has left.

but to me a producer is who produces the song/beat the person in the studio with the artist. If you sell a beat over the net or sumpn you produced the beat but once they lay vocals you shouldnt get credit for producing the track.Thats my opinion.

What???? That's cool it's your opinion but, if I made tha beat, to whom ever I sell it to want my credit and you should too. You might not get credit for writin' or arrangin', but yo you want that credit for tha beat. Say if tha song goes "Platinum"....................??????????????? "NO ROYALITES"?????

I'm glad your willin' work and not get paid........lol it all love dun, learn ya lessons!!!

actually dog when you sell your beat you should get credit for making the beat regardless of what happens with the beat afterwards. the only way to get production credit for that beat is to be part of the production team thats turning that beat into a hit. cause there is only going to be a "executive producer then co-producers" look if a label wants to buy your beats and throw a contract in your face for that beat just make sure you read the fine print cause you might be selling all your rights to that beat with that beat. yo in the music biz think dollars & sense.

yo voorheez mp, this cat dont want to get paid for his work!!!!

yo but to answer your question,

if you wrote the words to a song a producer would take those words compose and arrange music for those words bringing life to that song. then that song would be presented to the excutive producer for feed back. if he says the song needs some salt & pepper to fully bring it out then the producer would find that salt & pepper and add it to the song to give it the flavor that it needs.

now ask yourself, who produced the music? and who produced song?????

Producer:

The drunk guy you meet in a bar who owns 8 houses, 5 Bentley's and a BMW, lives in a choice part of town, knows all the major players such as Russel Simmons, Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, etc., and is in town looking for local talent to put together a new hot album that is GUARANTEED to go platinum gold.

All you have to do is give him a small fee of $300 to get 'da studio' running, and he'll get back to you when things are up and running.

If you look real close at the credits you'll see produced by Dr.Dre all keys played by this one and drums programed by that one meaninig dre didn't make the beat he made sure it went down the way he wanted it to

Think of producer as another name for COACH...just like manager is the same thing in baseball. In sport a coach dont always have to had played the sport but sometimes it helps and in the music game all producers dont have to know how to make beats. Thats where alot of these young guys are getting twisted...just because they make beats there a producer....NO your beatmaker. To me person who is good with lyrics aint a Rap artist until they get sign so until then there just a rhymer or a rapper same thing for us who make beats....when you as a beat maker can get paid for your work or have a single or group of people follow almost your everyword when it comes to putting together a musical project then your are producer...until then stop lying to them bytches talking about your a producer but then when ol girl ask you "who you produce" you got nothing to say.....you would be better off saying your a beatmaker!

Aright, i got it now.

But, I think everybody should start putting beatmaker in their credits.

And fame_keyz, you saying the thing about the producers being almost a coach. I always wondered how Suge Knight got his name on some of tupacs tracks as the producer. Now i get it.

Thanks everybody.

Yeah my opinion is the same as fame_keyz.
I consider my self aproducer because I know the over all process. I have a rap group I produce. My cousin who is in the group also does beats but he's not a "producer" he might do beats for some of the tracks but I produced it. Recorded, aranged, mixed every thing ect.he gets beat maker credit . I think like it was mentioned by a few people. A producer doesn't nececeraly have to do or know how to do beats ,even tho it help
s.like look at rock producers. The band plays all the instruments but the producer puts it all together .

the best way to put this is like this.
the producer is the record companys third eye. he/she is hired to make sure the project will work and is in the style that the contract implies.
a producer like people have mentiod has a very broad understanding of the music. and knows how to make a band go from sounding like a garge band to a professional rock outfit. the producer is not a songwriter(beatmaker new words keep poping out everywhere). he does the same job a director does in making a movie, but in music with a band or rapper pop group insted of actors. one thing i have noticed over the years is that people are getting producer and song writer mixed up. if you write beats dance songs or rock songs you are a song writer, you can call your self made up musical terms like beatmaker wich really is a new way of saying song writer, but thats what you are, if you are hired by a band rapper pop group or record company to produce the artist/s then your there to make them sound better more commercial more grungie more underground hip hop whatever the record company wants you wouldnt be there to make songs (beats).
where it changes is this artists song writers have just started to understand the power of the producer and the power of owning your own lable and that means you can do what ever you want as an artist insted of having the record company tell you otherwise. the whole reason prince turned his name into a symble was because the record company didnt want him to release music that wasnt the style of pop that sold all them millions of records he made. record companys dont wanna take risks because its big mony promotion recording the lot so they go for what they are 99% sure will sell thats why when a style gets big it all starts to sound the same because thats the formula thats working and anything eles is a big risk.so poor prince wasnt allowd to release anything under that name or his real name or in another band name it was all in his contract except one thing it never said he couldnt change his name to a symble and release music under that, music he wanted to release not what the record company was sure would sell.
so now these days artists are becomeing everything so they have full power in recording and releasing what they want, so they take on rolls as producer song writer preformer dircter and owner of record lables and try to become a bigger package or they get other peoples songs and make them into there style, and now you get dre calling himself a producer insted of songwriter/ producer/ect ect, its shorter to say producer and i think they think it sounds cooler or something.
