I only can have 16 tracks playin or else I get this message :

There are more Audio Tracks than available voices.

How can I increase the numbers of voices? I lost my user manual, and I really don't know what to do.

I went to Digidesign.com and this is what the answerbase gave me for your problem.
It also depends on if your usin a Mac or a PC .....

PC
This error has many potential causes, all of which relate to overtaxation of your computer's PCI buss. The information provided below should resolve most occurrences of the error.

1) Make sure that all system hardware is compatible by checking the online compatibility page for your specific Pro Tools system at http://www.digidesign.com/compato/. Pay careful attention to the SCSI, expansion chassis, and dual monitor graphics card requirements. Systems using unsupported hardware are prone to -6042 errors.

2) Make sure all PCI cards are installed in the correct order in your computer or expansion chassis. Refer to your installation guide.

3) Dual monitor configurations utilizing a secondary PCI Graphics card are prone to -6042 errors and are not supported

4) Hard drives that will be used for recording / playback with Pro Tools must be formatted correctly to ensure proper performance. Current drive requirements for your Pro Tools system are available at http://www.digidesign.com/compato under the Hard drive Minimum Requirements Section. You cannot record tracks to Jazz, Zipp, USB, Network or other unsupported volumes.

5) Other hardware devices such as Modem, Network, Sound Cards etc. may cause -6042 errors in Pro Tools if the device drivers are active in the Device Manager. Disable these devices in the device manager.

6) Go to Start Menu > Run. Type in "msconfig" at the prompt and hit enter. In the System Configuration Utility Window choose the Startup tab, Disable any startup applications that are not related to the Windows Operating System.

7) The following Pro Tools Software adjustments will help reduce PCI bandwidth thereby decreasing the likely hood of -6042 errors:

- QuickPunch doubles the amount of data per voice sent over the PCI bus. Disable QuickPunch to see if the session plays back.
- Disable the Record Online at Insertion / Selection Preference.
- Automation, especially of TDM plug-ins, requires PCI bandwidth also. Try suspending automation globally or per-track.
- On a Mix system with Pro Tools 5.1.3 and higher you can take advantage of Voice Load Balancing if there is more than one Mix card installed. Go to Setups > Playback Engine. If in 32 voice mode, try switching to 64 voice mode and make sure that the voice allocation is set to auto. This will balance the PCI load between multiple chips on multiple PCI cards. On HD systems you have the option of assigning more DSP chips for the same amount of voices. (I.E. 1 DSP 32 voices, 2 DSP's 32 voices etc.) Using additional DSP chips for the same amount of voices will reduce PCI load.

8) Do not exceed the maximum supported track count per hard drive in your Pro Tools Session. Use the Setups > Disk Allocation window to verify track allocation. You can check the maximum supported track counts for your Pro Tools system at http://www.digidesign.com/compato in the Minimum Hard Drive Requirements section.

9) In Pro Tools, you can check the current PCI load by viewing the System Usage Window at Windows > Show System Usage.

10) Disabling Video Hardware Acceleration can resolve 6042 errors for users with PCI video cards.

open the Display control panel
click the "Settings" tab
click "Advanced"
click the "Performance" tab ("Troubleshoot" tab for XP)
in the graphics box, set the hardware acceleration slider to "none"

11) Ensure that your computer has the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.

This error has many potential causes, all of which relate to overtaxation of your computer's PCI buss. The information provided below should resolve most occurences of the error.

4) Hardrives that will be used for recording / playback with Pro Tools must be formated correctly to ensure propper performance. Current harddrive requirements for your Pro Tools system are available at http://www.digidesign.com/compato under the Harddrive Minimum Requirements Section. -6042 errors can occur when writing to unsupported volumes (Jazz, Zip, USB, Network Etc.)

5) SCSI Accelerator card Sync Rate / Burst Rate settings must be configured according to card model. Correct settings for the supported SCSI cards can be found in Answerbase ID#26515. Incorrect SCSI settings may cause -6042 errors.

6) Pro Tools running under OS 9.x does not utilize the second processor in dual processor Power Mac G4 models. -6042 errors can occur when the second processor is active. Digidesign recommends moving the folder named "Multiprocessing" from the System Folder "Extensions" folder to the "Extensions (Disabled)". Restart the computer.

7) Under OS 9.x, The following optimizations should be made to your computer to prevent -6042 errors:

- Create a Pro Tools specific extension set in the extensions manager by duplicating the Mac OS Base 9.x set and activating only the necessary Digidesign, OMS, ILOK etc. extensions. Do not add any third party extensions for products that are not being used in conjunction Pro Tools.
- Disable any graphics accelerator extensions in the extensions manager (I.E. ATI Extensions for ATI graphics Cards)
- Set monitor colors to 256 for Macs with PCI graphics cards.
- In the Apple Memory Control Panel, set a Custom Disk Cache of 512k.
- In the Apple Appearance Control Panel do not use Charcoal for large system font, turn off font smoothing, and disable Platinum Sounds.

8) The following Pro Tools Software adjustments will help reduce PCI bandwidth thereby decreasing the likelyhood of -6042 errors:

- QuickPunch doubles the amount of data per voice sent over the PCI bus. Disable QuickPunch to see if the session plays back.

9) In Pro tools, you can monitor PCI usage in Windows > Show System Usage.

Hey,

1. How fast is your computer?
2. How much RAM have you installed?
3. How fast is your hard drive?
4. How fast is your IDE bus?
5. Are these stereo or mono tracks? 16 bit or 24 bit? 44.1k, 48k?
6. Are you running any other programs in the background?

Take care,

Nick

THX a lot MadScientist and Vitaminman!

On the site they say : 32 tracks

LOL that means 32 mono tracks that I can play simultanous, only 16 stereo.

That's about it, so now I can start doin mixdowns in my tracks because working with only 16 tracks is nothing.

BTW do you think that the real protools software, not the Protools LE that I got for my digi002, will change anything.

Are these software or hardware limitations?

Hey,

These are software limitations, I could probably point out in the C++ code where the programmers define how many tracks you can have when you load a session. It is used as a marketing ploy to offer you a stepping stone down the path of their software; then once you're well in and wanting more, they can hit you with another set of features and charge you for them. It doesn't cost the developers much more to make an LE version of the program, it's based off the code of their full version, they simply don't check in all the functionalities and they make a few modifications (like the number of tracks you can have) in the code, build it, then repackage it as a completely separate program.

Take care,

Nick

ProTools HD is not simply a software package- it's the combination of the HD softaware, and 1-3 mix farm cards that provide dsp processing, essentially taking the strain off your computer's processor. The Digi 002 cannot interface with these cards simply because Mix/Farm cards are PCI while the oo2 is Firewire; and honestly, if you could afford an HD system, it would make no sense to use an 002 on the same system.

Do not downplay the LE software included with your 002. I run that system now, and although Cubase SX does have some nice tricks, ProTools does enough for me to mix and record. One trick I use to get around the track limitation is to do tracking in PT, but then export the audio tracks and import those into Cubase for mixing. (As Cubse doesn't have a track limitation.) You can download a .wav driver update that will allow you to use your 002 with another software package from the Digidesign site.

-PEACE,
Haterade
