sup just droppin you all a line to let you know that Digidesign Pro Tools 7 has made its debut as of the 7th Oct. lots of new features but lacking a few which i would have hoped would be included (e.g. non real time bounce to disk, auto delay compensation, more voices, more inserts, midi notation etc.) PT 7 includes lots of dope new shit though. the midi in PT is now much better and i expect it would b comparable with logic / sonar etc etc midi implementation. anyone who got PT on sep 1st or later gets a free update and all of you lucky muthafuckin mpowered PT users also get a free update. myself, i have to pay 75USD or some shit. all good though.

ps. this release is obviously a result of this years AES Convention. native instruments also released 9 new products and many other companes released new shit too.

the update will not be avaliable for download for around a month (guessing). but in the mean time you can check out the new features at www.digidesign.com just follow the links on themain page. PT 7 is plastered all over it.

Fortunately Pro Tools will NEVER have real-time bouncing. When you have real time bouncing, you no longer have the ability to use outboard processors. So if you wanna you that nice vintage tube compressor to fatten up that kick drum, you wont be able to do it. Also, Pro Tools does have auto delay compensation, u just have to go in and turn it on in your preferences. As far as voices, the only limitations are ProTools LE. As far as inserts, you can easily use more than 5 inserts, you just need to be creative with your routing. Use the 5 inserts on an audio track, then route the output of the audio track, to the input of an aux track, then you can use 5 more, and continue the chain. Or you can always print down those 5 effects to a new audio track, then add another 5. And MIDI notation, maybe we have different views of MIDI notation, but Pro Tools is fully equipped with MIDI notation in my sense of the word. Do you mean notation software that writes out notes in a traditional clef format?

Anyways, I don't mean to discredit you, I'm just trying to prove how powerful ProTools really is. Most people don't know half of it's features. Most people are stuck with basic editing, fades and other basic tools in the software. Get a ProTools book, you'll be suprized at how powerful the program is.

im aware of the issue with outboard gear and real time bounce. it would be good to have the option though where you can choose if you want real time or not. that way, if your not using out board gear, you can do a non real time bounce.

there is no auto delay compensation in PT LE. you are thinking of PT HD.

im also aware that LE is limited with voices. but im saying more voices in LE would be welcome.

im aware of the work arounds for inserts.

and yeah i meant midi notation that writes it out on a clef. should have been more specific there sorry.

yeah i agree that PT is powerful as fuck. and i know most of the work arounds to most limitations in LE. i just think that LE could have been souped up a bit more for version 7 so that the workarounds wouldnt be neccessary and it would have a bit more power.

I think one of the biggest time savers that they implemented was the instrument track. Never deal with routing between MIDI/Aux tracks again. That was long overdue. I havent had a chance to really sit down and go over all the features, I only watched a few demo's at AES several days ago, but from what I saw I was happy.

As far as notation software, there are other softwares that only do notation. And do it very well. Pro Tools isnt meant to be a jack of all trades. It does audio, and hand down does it better than any other program out there. Now they're really starting to beef up their MIDI capabilities, because they realize it's necessary for the applications of Pro Tools. But notation software isn't necessary and I doubt will ever be seen in PT.

yeah word up those instrument tracks sound good. the midi routing was an unessessary headfuck.

yeah i know of sibalius (sp?) or some shit that is a music notation program. i also doubt this feature will be seen in PT. as you said PT is aimed at the recording and engineering environment, not the electronic music production crowd. im looking forward to trying out PT 7 to see if these new midi upgrades really improve the workflow and power.

ill probs wait till the main bugs are sorted out before i buy it though since PT 6.9 is doing good for me at the moment. although i wouldnt mind the hyper threading support in PT 7so i can slap on more RTAS plug ins.

does digi design still reqquire you to have their hardware installed to use pro tools?
