i got a 404 mainly as an fx rig for when i dj...but i've been trying to figure it out to make beats on it. i say you have more flexibility with the mpc but it's also like 800 bucks whereas the 404 is super cheap...it's just a new modality to learn. it really depends on what kind of grip you have to spend...

can you chop samples in it? (the roland)
sometimes I just create melodic compositions and can't create any drum patterns, so I wanna be able to resample into the machine.
if it has dope effects than shit i'll read the shit outta that manual.

you can truncate samples for sure...i haven't been able to dig too far into that part of it. as far as resampling, you can resample into the machine. the fx definitely are pretty dope. it's pretty much entirely sample-based so your melodies would have to be sampled ones.
The 404 sounds pretty ill for a portable machine. Before I got this laptop, I wanted to maybe get a MPC500 so I can make something in class. I get bored pretty easily, so that's why I contemplated getting one, but they would give me these weird looks if I were to start banging the fuck out of it while rocking a kool-aid smile with my headphones one trying to groove with the beat.
