LDB For Chord progression I would just get the chord book above or something similar to it. Then learn about the circle of 5ths.

I have a chord dictionary. Actual chord progressions are a horse of a diff't color i.e chords that you would use together and the best way to move to them without jumping all over the keyboard or piano. If you know what chords sound good together your can create diff't patterns within that scale. I see a lot of players staying in the same 12 key range and hitting each and every chord with out jumping around. Though it's cool to jump around for diff't voicing it's not always necessary and most the most popular chord progression seem to be simple but effective.
yeah...I think I need to rap my head around the circle of 5ths. I'm pretty damn good with finding chords. I got the major and minors down. The seven came pretty easy as well. From what I've been reading the 9's are real big in RnB right now. I know they've always been big in Gospel.
I think u need to consolidate the thread I started recently (the good stuff anyway) with yours.

All I know about chord progression is moving my fingers into three finger combinations until I find what sounds right. Some times the progression will be just moving one finger up or down a half note.
I have heard a rumour somewhere along the grapevine that chords have a reverse chord too, but with out pics its pretty hard to explain. I dont really know much about chord theory, just what sounds right.

It's called "inversion". Say you're playing the Cmajor chord, C,E & G. Normally your RH thumb (first finger) would be on the root C, your (third finger) middle finger would be on E and your (fifth finger) pinky would be on G. To invert that chord your thumb would be on E, your middle on G and your pinky on C another inversion would be to place your thumb on G, middle on C and the pinky on E. As long as you play C,E & G the fingering doesn't matter!

when i get home I'll look somethin up in this book i got, its got a list of chords that lead into other chords well, like I goes to iii, IV, V, or vii, etc... its a big help, ill get it to u later today.

Fantastic online resource. Learn some basic music theory, known your scales and modes, practice your fingering and your music skill and the quality of your beats will increase ten-fold. Not only will you be able to mix original music with samples, you will eventually be making beats from scratch without samples - getting to the point where using a sample is a choice, not a necessity.
Also, even if you only understand the basics, you can communicate with musicians i.e. keyboardists and guitarists - learning how to play is the step from beat-maker to producer.

I feel u. I got along many many years without having some understanding of music theory. There's a big difference between just finding your way through putting a track together and actually knowing where u need to go. I got away from the sample game along time ago. Just trying to understand music better for the second half of my production life. Whether it be actually producing or being able to take a young hungry producer on the come up and teaching him everything I know. Hell in another 5 or 6 years I might grab me a steady gig playing piano at a Church....lol
Getting the circle of 5ths down seems to be getting me to where I want to go. After that I'll dig into voicing some more and learning the bigger chords i.e 9th and bigger. Don't think I need to know them for what I do but hey....I like to learn new SHHHHHHHIIIITTTTTTT!
