to whoever samples basslines, where do you usually get them from? you sample from hiphop? how do you just pull it out of a song? all by eq'ing? never done it before but i feel like bass is one of my weakpoints cause all the bass i have never really sounds too good when i put it in.

I get my bass from Diggin.

Not Hip-Hop. Never Sample Hip-Hop unless your samplin a classic track and you have no other choice.

EQing mostly. The MFC-42 has a nice filter. But i love the EPS16+'s filter. You filtewr out all the high and most of the mid frequencies, then you just got the bass.

yep diggin, make sure you got a lot of material that also keeps the inspiration fresh and you be astonished about the fact hiphop on sample base can recycle and improve any other music. You can almost use everything but the only unspoken rule is dont sample from hiphop.. it is kinda wack just steal the rest hehehe. so expand your music collection i''d say..

hmmm, interestinf thread.....i love bass so, ill comment....

personally, like class, if i had the choice (ie when the bass is at my house) ill play bass, but that is because we have a fucking don 800w peavy bass stack, with inbound and outbound compression, with a behringer v-amp pro pre amp effect unit and a numark dj mixer, so when recording you can record at low levels, cuz of all the pre amps, so you get get fuzz/air or clipping....if however you use a crappy practice amp even with all the pre ampage, it stills seems weak sounding, if you then record at high levels cuz you dont have compression, it clips like a mutherfucker every time, and then if you record at low volume to compensate for this, you actually cant hear what you are playing, cuz PRACTICE AMPs are fucking peices of shit....so i would only really play live bass, if i had all of the hardware, otherwise there is no point....

i do use synth bass on reason, and the trick ive found with this is to layer a synth bass, with one of the nn19 accbasses, cuz then you get the actuall note being played by the sampler, but you can then get the mad thick bassy noise/feel from the subtractor, also synth bass, i would always say layer diffenent bass sounds rather than layering the same sound, i dunno, from my experience this seems to work, but only if the subtractors level is like half of the sampled level....

sampling bass.....gotta be the most skillfull part of sampling IMO!!!! they used don valve amps and analogue recording techniques, so that sound cannot really be recreated, so if you are going for that type of vibe, peace my brothers.....reminds me fucking saw Quantic Soul Orchestra at GLASTONBURY (sorry for the name drop) they used old school amps, a fucking old hammond (and i mean old) and a fucking well battered drum kit.....and it does make a fcking big difference, I TELL THEE!

but peace....these are my, like, opinions man!!!!

How does everyone here create a bassline when composing a beat? After you make the drums or whatever, how do you make sure that the bassline is musically or melodically harmonizing or whatever with any other sounds (piano, strings etc.)? Also, has anyone ever sampled a bassline and how do yall get a good idea for one that sounds good and phat?
It depends on what key your in when creating a song. Let's say your in the key of C and you playing the piano, guitar, whatever.< Skip that> Basically, whatever chord you play the on the piano or guitar, the bass is just the root of the chord. Root, mean the lowest not sounded or on a piano whatevers furthest to the left. For Example, if you play the basic Cmaj chord which is C.E.G the bass would be C. Now, if you inverted this chord to E.C.G the bass would be E. See, In the first example C is in the root postion, in example tow e is in the root. Same chord, just flipped. Most of the time 90% i't just the root of the chord. But then you have the got into chord progressions and voice leading. Also, look at some sheet music. Most of the time you can tell what key you in by just checking out the 1st and last measures and see chord is play on the first. So next time you listen to a song, playing a attention to the 1st and last measure and the try to match it on the piano. Chord progression- I-IV-V very common. learn some theory and you be find. i usually sampled my basslines .. there only like a couple songs i made wiith a completely original bassline ... i find it hard to get a thick, natural sound out off my reason sythns ... if i had a good keyboard or module then maybe i would play it more but the sythn bassses i use sounds real weak compared to a thick ass sampled bassline

Word up, I try to make my own but 1 outta 5 sound okay. I like to sample mines. It just feels more Hip Hoppish,,,ya dig!

Usually, when I create basslines I close my eyes and try to feel the sample I'm looping. If the beat has a jazzy type of feel its easy, but wit club joints I really use basslines, just a lotta bass here and there.

I've got 4-6 bass tones that I use now and days. I'd used to just use a bass filter of the main sample, but I figured out how to use that one tone and make my own basslines, not to mention that those were usually fuller and deeper in frequency than the low pass filtered basslines. Right now, I'm playing with Sound Forge to make some new ones....I already have made 2....
