Anyone care to predict how fast Bill O'Reilly is going to try and ruin Aaron McGruder's career?

I think i know what markN means, its like so much of our tv over here is american shows, we get those american films and standups. I dunno, if it goes deeper, but it does seem to be more of the same presented in a different way, funny though.

Dont take this the wrong way either, and correct me if i misinterpreted you but man there is racism / race related issues everywhere, we dealing with the same issues over here, frankly we dont have it as bad as some people.

nahh i aint taking it bad at all, Its cool to discuss, dumb to argue....

yea ur right race is a world wide phemonen but the cartoon and comic strip(which has been out for years) deals specificlly with alot of american poltics and race relations just wait till the R. kelly epsiode and you will see.

Like alot of things you need context, for me this cartoon is a big step foward, british TV is alot more libral then US... THis is the first time a show has really address serious race isses in an intellgent humours context.. The things they show are not exegradded, that stuff really goes on(forgive my typing )

It also does a good job of showing the self hate within the black communitity that most people outside are not aware of

I get what your saying, i think id need to see more episodes, but how would you say the cartoon differs from a sitcom like "the hughleys" which has only just recently arrived over here??

hmmm calss r u sure ur not reading to much into this cartoon, i don't see it as a big step forward it seems to re-inforce stereotypes rather than address serious race issues !?
p.s i don't think its something only people from the us who deal with minorities can understand......

Nahh trust me im not reading to much into this, you have to know the history of the comic and its creator, This cartoon address alot of issues we deal wit today..read this interview .. and you will see,
http://www.alternet.org/story/11859

The show is ALOT deeper then you think remember thats just one epsidoe, this cartoon is gonna address alot of issues that dont get talked about on american TV... Its not about re-enfocing sterotypes at all, its about getting people to wake up andthink .

Nahh only to a certain extent man, of course people of all races creeds and colors can empthaize with the show. But alot of the issues touched on by this cartoon are very specific to american culture... and racial prejudice

Put the shoe on the other foot, if there was a welsh cartoon out that addressed the history of english oppession i would miss alot of cultural signifcants , becasue while i may understand the general context of the show, im not welsh so alot of the historical /cultural context would be lost on me...

class...

HOLD ON. First of all, this is not a debate on any "race card". My post was about the inevitable backlash McGruder will receive for the show, which is very clever with several subtleties and inside jokes -- which are only funny in their irony, not in any literal or STERETYPICAL sense. What's stereotypical is this kind of attitude to an attempt at revealing certain truths about being African-American in THIS country. You're looking at this show from an extremely superficial level, which I guess is not surprising.

For example, did you notice the implications of Ed Asner's character references to "toasting to the old school" with Grandad? How pressed he was to have "that drink" with him? And what was stereotypical about Huey's dream sequence? Have you EVER seen something like that before? What about the white son from the army, who was so eager to show off his guns to Riley? Stereotypes? LIST THEM. These characters embody different aspects of our history and existence here, from past to present, and a little in-between. All three...Huey, Riley, and Grandad represent the extremes of the differing perspectives on our existence here. And if you think I'm reading "too much" into it, so what, maybe you don't read enough.

be easy man....

Hold on man....

Be easy , while a agree wit alot of what your saying mark is a real good dude

He is just stating things from his perspective and you cant knock that, he is one of the few cats i talk to personally on ill and we talk about race issues all the time. So i know what he means when he says the "reading into issues". To the outside , americans are overly sensative about race etc..., in the UK its totally differnt so you can knock dude for giving his perspective just like he cant knock me for giving mine.

You can get mad at somebody for giving their opionion.. And attacking him aint gonna do nutting...

chill.. the heck out man and get the chip off your shoulder
its just a friendly discuession

I was only irritated that he seemed to miss the entire point of the show, which should be fairly obvious. I hardly think I was attacking more than I was clarifying a most obvious point, much like the many misconstrue the real meaning behind LB's new album. It's hard NOT to respond to statements like that.

LOL chill out, like class said we have these conversations about racial issues a lot, so it is something i know a bit about and have an opinion on.
im sorry if that opinion offended you in any way but theres no need to attack me, maybe im not reading enough into it but i was giving my opinion on it after i watched it, which whether you like it or not is as valid as yours, i come from a totally different background to you so im bound to view it differently ! but don't get mad over it ...
