the omni picks up sound from all the directions ,cardiod in a heart shape a lot from the front a little from the sides and none from the back the figure eight picks up sound from the front and back well but very little to none from the sides studio recording usually uses cardiod mics the other ones are used for diffrent uses in video production

Try gettin the Behringer B-1. It's usually $100 with the shockmount and Windscreen. It sounds real good for the price. And it has a -10db cut to take a little bass from your voice. I'd buy it if it were $200. If your looking to buy one i'd suggest that.

omni directional is also good if u have have a crew of people that want to rap all at once they can all stand around the mic and the mic will pick up evenly from all directions
Hey Mad! There is no standard when it comes to microphones, people pick them based on what they need for the job and then what sounds best and what they can afford, all those diagrams show is how each mic picks up its signal you can have good vocals using a Shure SM57 or SM58 for about $100, What application are you working with? it will depend, are you trying to mic drums? Are you just needing a vocal mic? It will depend, Microphones vary you can go from $100-$7000 and more. Some Microphones will cost more than a fuckin car believe it or not, handmade type shit no machinery.
Dr Dre uses a $7000 microphone most of the time.
I use a radio shack mic lol (and others)
Condenser mics are used mainly for pro vocals in studio
tube condenser mics are used as well for vocals and instruments
dynamic mics are used for vocals on stage
That's my knowledge of this maybe other peeps can help, but don't worry about the diagrams too much, there is no standard it always depends on what your working with in the lab.

THE BETTER THE FREQUENCY RESPONSE THE MORE ACURATE YOUR RECORDINDS WILLL SOUND AND THE MORE CALRITY IT WILL HAVE.
THE MIC SENSITIVTY IS HOW SENSITIVE THE MIC IS TO SOUND. THE MORE SENSITVE THE LESS GAIN OR BOOST IS NEEDED.
I USE THE BEHRINGER B-1 MIC, N RECOMMEND IT 2 EVERY1,
CUS OF ITS PRICE N STUDIO QUALITY.

I all ready have a U-87 Neumann Mic. I just wanted to know what the different patterns mean ..... Thank you for your input. But I don't need a new Mic.
I guess your asking this because your Neuman U87 can pickup these three directional patterns.
Condenser mics are excellent choices for vocal reproduction.
Bidirectional is best used for across-the-table interviewing or two facing music sources.
Omnidirectional is ideal for clip-on mic application. However, you must be very careful with equalization because omni-directional microphones have a high propensity for feedback.
Cardioid mics are best used for announcing, narration, and hand held vocal.
