Should I normalize samples that I can't get to 0db? Most of the hi-hats I sample off wax are well below 0db even when I put my mixer volume at max. Kicks and Snares, I can always get to 0db. Should I normalize these hi-hats? Also sometimes my other samples aren't near 0db either, should I normalize them?

id stray away from normalizing any of your samples. in fact dont be to concerned if its not at 0db. of course youve gotta do sumthing if you cant hear it in the mix but when you normalize it will make your sample louder but it will also bring up heaps of the noise floor from the vinyl. try using a destructive plugin called 'gain'. (if your using cubase its in the audio process menu, if your using protools its an audio suite plug in) this will allow you to increase the actual waveform (boost the sound without the volume fader changing). again youve gotta get a balance between a loud enough sound and not to much noisefloor.
hope this helps.
