Nas is using a lot of loops of classics with little or no drums now. *now with a link

ina gadda da vida... by iron buterfly... its a very well known song. if yo uhave heard theifs theme, tahts all there is to it. it is no different. there is nothing in the song taht isnt in the theifs theme beat.

on a side note, lets NOT turn this into a "loops are wack" type thread... the thread is about nas and his production as of late... so lets not have yet another 5 page debate.

let me clarify something- his use of straight asamples itself wasnt what i considered innovative; its the fact that an artist of his caliber within the industry- a major, long tenured commercial artist- who is doing the complete opposite of the industry's current formula.... he's doing the music he wants to do and isnt phased by trying to fit the mold of radio and mtv.

so, while we are being inundated by "street" artists barraging radio with pop songs, nas is mak9ng the music he wants to make, and is doing so according to what he sees as "real" hip hop...

and i respect that. i never said looping a sample and rapping over it is innovative.... but considering the status of who is doing it, given the current industry climate and all that, he is definitely doing his own thing and not following other artists or industry trends.

for that, i got mad respect.

um yeah mos def... weve had this argument a zillion times....

anyhow, if radio ait gonna love this album, its almost a lock that i will. nas- outside of pharoahe, mos, and com- is my favorite artist, and his best has always been (to me) his non-radio tracks.

anyhow, here is a link to the song:

http://www.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=5A68099C5AABA38830065C6DF8068D14

its a dope song, regardless of it being a loop with no drums added.

the beat for c.r.e.a.m. was straight cut off a song and looped with nuthin else done to it but maybe boosted the bass a little louder which sum simple eqin coulda done ,and that song is classic ,i def think its innovative your taking something that wasnt hip hop before and your making it hip hop, and sumtimes less is more

Have we forgot that NAS is a MC?
In my opinion, the only reason this style works is because he really can spit. Imagine putting Petey Pablo (or some other "rapper/entertainer") over a simple looped beat like this. What happens? They can't do it. Using a, for lack of a better word, "shitty" beat just serves the point of showing that Nas is a great lyricist. Fuck production...he wants people to LISTEN to him.

Agreed?

yeah that thief's theme was a boring as loop. i am a ami bass and guitar player and i can play that. As i played it i decided it's not even really hot.

sooooo

it isnt "hot" beacuse you can play it, or its too simple to play? you say you decided it wasnt good when you were able to play it.....

oh well , to each their own i guess. its kind of lame to say "i can play this, therefore it isnt good" especially when we are talking about the original being a classic.

no, it doesnt ake it "good", becuase its all abou tthe execution. MC Nobody can do the same thing and make it unbearably boring.... but nas makes this a great song, because the loop is just a great background for his story telling and the hook.

just saying, that being able to play something or it being simple and easily done (who among us HAST done something similar? i myself have created the very same loop.... plus countless others at first.) doesnt necessarily make something wack... its one thing to feel like its boring or just not feelin it but to say you dont like it because you can play it... come on now...

Hey, it cool. Nas is not a producer. A loop suits him fine. WE ain't never bought a Nas CD for beats. lol Thief's Theme came off lovely.

I agree with the earlier post that he used a simple powerful sample as a rhyme vehicle. Since stillmatic nas has been reminding america that he is the illest mc, not Gay-z. I saw thiefs theme as a rebellion against the mercenary production still of the black album, in which Jay bought up beats from producers with increasing popularity. But, I think that Jay lacks the realness to make a thief's theme work. Nas is still trying to re-etablish street cred after his firm garbage. Sure AZ is nice, but that firm stuff was wack. Anyway Nas an Em seem do be the rawest mc's over simple beats. Now i will say that that Thief's theme beat could have been done better, even to fit Nas. Some breaks and chops, layered drums, etc. I'm still buyin his album. For the record I liked the Grey album better than the Black album.

hey cold it doesn't mean it's bad cause i can play it. I'm just an ami guitar player and i would think if you use a little ami loop it should be dope, that beat to me was no good. Nas drops lame ass radio tracks then comes with some heavy rock shit, that's not even good. Just my thoughts don't get it twisted.

yo who made theifs theme?... and for ONCE i agree with truth... but yo they defiantely added some kick and snare to that loop.... and i love it when nas uses some classic shit... made you look was a classic break and then that one james brown joint that everyone has used i cant remember the name... he can make simple loops sound good by rippin shit on it... if i had nas ready to spit on something for me i would re think using some of those loops that i may have thought were too well known... but for christs sake i couldnt believe how many cats in here aint never heard the iron butterfly joint... i guess no one understood that one simpsons eppisode where they play it in church... yo im lovin the bside to theifs theme too... shit is dope... what'd you think of that joint?
