Labels will tell you "We want producers with big names on the album" People are brainwashed into liking anything by some particular name.

It's been like that for so long and always will be like that. One song thats like it at the moment is that Busta Rhymes song ''Light that ass on fire'', I think that beat is horrible but it's being played all the time just because its by a big name rapper and producer. Beatoff's right, people will like anything if it's by a particular name.

people incorporate names with selling records, society is scared to exbrace new things, that's why i'f your new you have to kick down the door because the industry has all closed doors for new cats.

I agree also, I've been around for a while and looking back in the day, all you needed to do at first was "spit some lyrics" to get on. Then times got a lil harder and you had to be able to have some meaning behind what you were spitting about. Then you had to have a "certain look" and so on...Now you have to have all the above plus...a prison record, sold dope at some point, been shot once or twice and be able to pimp mad chics...lol. Seriously, its all about marketing. People pay BIG $$$$ for what they want so the people that are selling the product have to give them what they want.

You know there is a lot of stuff nowadays that really might be considered wack only because of the club appeal.....I mean like the club scene and those kind of tracks are in demand by labels because they want people dancing up in the club.....a lot of mc's are more for a jiggy track than a hot instrumental that sounds like some old premo or nas track or a beat that might be the hottest in a beat contest......I am working with 3 types of rappers......up top NY style, Dirty South and the B2k club/pop type rapper/singer so I gotta have lots of variety when I work with them, that keeps my shidd selling.....so I mean versatility will keep you around, I mean Timbo is proof that you can do some wack kiddie sounding track or lay down a serious RNB track that holds it own with any accomplished musical track......I think now there are so many styles of rappers that you run into, and with that there has to be a lot of different tracks.....but we know that good producers can adjust to the project and if you just got one style you won't be around long....and vis versa a good rapper can change his style....

I'm constantly amazed by the complete B.S. that passes for music sometimes these days! It does seem that all 'popular' music is more about image than substance.
Strangely enough the chart number 1 here in the UK is a Dr. Dre instrumental ('What's the Difference') with Sean Paul rapping (!?!) and some woman singing. What's up with that? I mean it's a nice bit of G-Funk, but come on, just singing new words over it doesn't deserve a number 1 slot surely? That track is years old now, they've not even done anything clever or new with it!

yea man i've had enough of this whole beat jacking bullshit....jermaine dupri, irv gotti, ect. just taking popular beats, not modifying them whatsoever, and puttin artists on them as if its a new track....i mean its understandable for mixtapes but the shit these guys are pulling is rediculous. im the most chilled out cat ever but hearing these songs makes me violent...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

I agree. People reckon anything from a dope producer will be dope.

But there is no such thing as a perfect beat so everyone is going to make their fair share of sloppy ones.

Instead of talking about how dope some producers are they need to sit down, turn the lights off and fucking LISTEN to their music.

As far as some of the mainstream producers who often don't amaze me, one of my teachers told me something at school in a marketing course, "sell the sizzle not the bacon" this is the golden rule in the Music Industry. Hype up your product as much as possible, get 10 other big name artists to appear on your album to make it seem like it's the dopest thing comin and then produce half ass beats and production work! I support good music with variety and of all sorts, but I don't remember the last Hip-Hop album that really really had my head spinning and/or stayed in my CD player long term. With all the tools and technology available these days there is no reason some of these producers can't crank out above average hot music. Don't get me wrong either, there is some hot music out there, but I also hear a lot of simple kiddie beats, maybe the artist wanted that type of track, if so that reflects on the artist and or their label. Everybody has their taste, but I know one thing we got to raise the bar.
