Man me personally. I would use a musician anyday i think its a plus to production. But at the same time i would never get a musician and start relying on him has the main part of my production. Because for one sampling is an art form to me. And is the essence of hip hop today and yesterday and the future. Sampling will only get better has people branch off and start taking it to a whole nother level. And as far as playing a composition from another artist work and using it for a track is worst than sampling the actual track unless you switch the chords and make a different melody based on the original. Because if im going to use someone elses work and make money off it why not let them get some of it too. Why try and short change them by playing it yourself, they're going to recognize the music regardless unless you totally switch it. I think that the only way you should really compose a rendition of original music is if the sounds you are trying to sample are not able to be sampled to your approval but only as a last resort. These people we sampling from worked hard at what they did and alot of them were stripped of their publishing and copyright due lack of knowledge of the business in those days. Lets at least aknowledge them as the original composers of their work. Even if i flip a sample to the point that its not recognizable i'll still give the original artist their credit. Just paying dues thats all. Respect the game.

word up, and I know you got respect for that, remember, I didn't really take offense to your statements, cause like I said, I play instruments also.

I was just trying to give you a view of why cats reacted the way they did.

But with all this said, it is all to the goodie goodness of good.

Glad you still enjoy the album, and good looks bringing it to the DP meeting.

Im a musician too. the Bass is my Main instrument, but I play Drums & piano as well.
I like to incorporate both worlds sampling & Live. You just cant beat the feel of Live. But I aint hatin on no man grindin, cause I do believe the ears play a LARGE role in whats going on, I started by ear and got tired of being limited so I taught myself music theory and how to read music and my business has gone up, people can humm a melody to me and I know where they are going not just with notes but whole chord arrangements. But like fade said, its how you use things. I know Bass/piano players with degrees, they know the scales & all that, but aint got no feel. Some people know the Theory & keys all around, but dont know how to apply it.

Dr. Dre is not a trained piano player. He is self taught. Hes takin music theory right now as we speak. So watch out!! hes gonna change the game again with that knowledge!! mark my words!

Well the thing I like about it is...I get paid for beats, I get hired to play bass on hip-hop tracks, and I can replay what I want to sample so I dont have to give up no publishing.

my 2 cents. as a musician/beatmaker/producer/arranger

well said friction.

i do think hiphop is progressing and changing over. like you guys are saying, it is indeed natural that it goes in that direction. but like friction said and class has also emphasized many times, you can have all your classical training degrees and yet not be able to make good use of it.

as for me, i love playing my guitar and the piano. i cant afford to get no official classical training but did quincy jones learn his trumpet at a high end music school, or did ray charles learn piano at some high class institution, no. am not saying am quincy or ray lol, hell no! am way below them dudes, but what am saying is, as we see this progression in hiphop, pick up an instrument, see if you enjoy it, and if u like, put it in ur beats, play in a live band. if you dont enjoy it, dont bother with it, no1 is saying you wont get anywhere if you cant play more than one instrument. at the end of the day, it will always come down to the "EAR".

LOL damn I think we all need to chill here, why can't we just have opinions and leave it at that? Stop challenging everything people say (this is for everyone).

"FYI whats really dope is when u can do both(sampleing or compsotion), U can be the haterz at their own game. Its a great feeling!"

Thats my style!!! I like to incorperate both samples and compositions in my production along with live instruments.I also use hardware and software nor do I prefer either...So this type of style/workflow offers a great amount of versitility in the creative process aswell as the sound obtained by using samples/virtual instruments/live instruments/sound modules/workstations etc. together in harmony, the sound is very mmm ... dynamic?

Yo Renegade homie, I agree. I think it's a beautiful thing when you can incorporate your own musical talents with some raw hip-hop! That's really being true to U! You are using ALL your giftings and talents in your music. Not taking ANYTHING away from those who strictly sample because they do things and hear things that some musicians do not. They use their giftings to make their music. When you can do both (play & sample), then you can take full advantage of music and take this hip-hop junk to another level. You have vision. I love producers who incorporate their musicianship skills into their music. They really challenge me.

Now, with that said, let me add this most important note: The music only sounds right when you understand hip-hop, the culture and the feeling of beatmaking. You've got to free yourself from the RULES of music a bit/ learn the rules of hip-hop and then you can break them properly. Like others have said thus far, nothing sounds worse that a musician (who has never done rap) doing rap music! It sounds so stiff and regimented. No soul, no feeling and absoultely no point.

im not all that of a lil jon fan but just how is he fucking up hip hop? just out of curiosity...

Lil Jon himself is not doing any harm, hes a tight producer, however when u get TOO MANY Lil Jon types thats when it goes downhill.
