Man me personally. I would use a musician anyday i think its a plus to production. But at the same time i would never get a musician and start relying on him has the main part of my production. Because for one sampling is an art form to me. And is the essence of hip hop today and yesterday and the future. Sampling will only get better has people branch off and start taking it to a whole nother level. And as far as playing a composition from another artist work and using it for a track is worst than sampling the actual track unless you switch the chords and make a different melody based on the original. Because if im going to use someone elses work and make money off it why not let them get some of it too. Why try and short change them by playing it yourself, they're going to recognize the music regardless unless you totally switch it. I think that the only way you should really compose a rendition of original music is if the sounds you are trying to sample are not able to be sampled to your approval but only as a last resort. These people we sampling from worked hard at what they did and alot of them were stripped of their publishing and copyright due lack of knowledge of the business in those days. Lets at least aknowledge them as the original composers of their work. Even if i flip a sample to the point that its not recognizable i'll still give the original artist their credit. Just paying dues thats all. Respect the game.
