MPD Alternatives

Well basically i wanna get the akai MPD thing because my brothers boys a drummer and he can program some sick drum patts but he is lost when he trys to use the redrum or any software programs so i want the mpd but its kind of costly duno if i can afford it so i was wondering if there is a cheaper alternative or how much i could copp a used 1 for .

Also can you use it to trigger your samples or is it strictly just for the drums ?

You can trigger samples on it, and you can assign the fader thing to something. I dont know of any thing that doesnt cost as much as that. But the Korg MicroKontrol has keys and pads, but it still costs more.
