I was thinking about getting the new mpc 1000 the black one with all the os updates installed, but I remember reading a thread were classic said that the 1000 and 2500 had no autochromation or something that he used to make his basslines. Question should I get the 1000 cop the 2000xl because of this reason, or basically when it comes down to it that one feature wouldn't stop me from making hot beats. I do want the bang for the bucks considering I'm knew to the game and I don't play keys or know music theory yet.

That really makes a difference if you have a midi controller. Cuz you'd be able to make a baseline with the MPC even without the autochromation effect...

look up the site to have more infos

sYgMa I use my fantom as my midi controller so you think I should get the 1000 and I never could fully grasped what classic was saying about the autochromation effect can anyone explain it in autochromation for dummies terms.

I have no problem laying down basslines without autochromation, in-fact I don't even know what it does. Although there is an autocromation program I found in the MPC Forums that is supposed to work; I downloaded it but havn't had the interst or time to investigate it, maybe in the future. If you want the bang for your buck get the mpc1000, midi keyboard, and reason with maad refills [or Motif, Triton, Fantom sound module].. But even that option could cost you up to 2 grand easily. I used software for 3 years before I ever thought about droppin these kinda duckets in the production bucket.. Although I did nearly quit while using software cause I thought the workflow sucked, my point is too don't waste your money, make sure you want to make the beats before you spend the greens.

Chrono I feel everything you saying I do have reason and the cubase sx3 but I'm finding working on in front of a computer screen and clicking a mouse sucks. The screen is burning my eyes and the mouse just dosen't seem like your really putting in whats inside of you feel me. So you have the 1000 has it made your creativity go up.

Ok...

Autochromation is kind of easy... When you have a bass sample or any sample for that matter, what you have is a sound with 1 note (like a C or a A...). But if you want to play notes (like a melody or a bassline), well, you need more than just 1 note... what autochromation does is that it spreads a sound on multiple keys with 1 not per key so you can really play a melody (with a keyboard for instance) You could do it yourself, but it's a time consuming process...

There is a function that looks like that in the MPC1000 (the "16 levels" button). It spreads 1 sound on all the 16 pads with different pitches... (but I dont know if it can spread the notes on the midi controller keys)

For myself, I like playing with the MPC1000 but only for the drums... I have to find myself a midi controller to play the bass line...

KurtisRich How do you do it is it like what sYgMa said with that function on the 1000 that looks like autochromation, or do you do it another way?

autochomatic funtion is dope, while you dont NEED it to lay basslines(you can use a soundmodule etc..) It is invaluable when you want to make your own basslines out of your own sounds or samples... I use the auto chomatic funtion on my xl to mapp custom bass sounds accross the keys. Dont sleep on that function IMO its one of the most imporant features on the XL(more then timestrech or zoning). becasue it allos me to compose with any sound i load...

Im not knocking those who dont know what it is etc.,.. but dont sleep on its importants and usabilitiy. its definatly a VERY VERY VERY important function, espically if ur a composer.... its one of the main reasons why i havent even considered going to a 2500. or 1000..(and i wont untill thats added to the os)

My 2 cents

class..

I hated making beats on the computer with FL or Reason, I felt like i should got paid for it. But the mpc is totally different. You should go to guitar center and play with it.

sYgMa: That's autochromation? I've been using that for a while on the mp. I have noticed that whil using the "16 levels" on a sample that I generally have to let go of one pad before I hit another which kinda sucks

Class: It was a few weeks after I recieved my unit until i found out about that feature, it really opened the options. But I have an mpc1000 and have "16 levels" which is autochromation as i understand it. I assume that with the xl though that if you layer one sample across the board that you can press two or three pads at the same time for chords, where as mine you can't.. i think that's what that meant when i read that the mpc1000 is mono and other mpc's are poly. so we mpc1000's users have mono-autochromatic it seems.. i wonder if 2.1 update fixed that....

I usually use the 16 levels and adjust the original key pad.

But most of the time I play my melodies in Reason or Cubase.

NAHH its differnt i have 16 levels also, auto chromatic to get the meaning of AUto chromatic just look at the name

auto- automaticlly
chormatic- the chormatic scale

so it automaticlly maps a sample across the chormatic scale(the black and white keys)

So basically it takes any sounds and maps it accross the keys like a keyboard patch. Making it a vitural instrament

16 levels is differnt, it just takes a sound and pitches it up and down a couple levels on the pads. It dosent do it according to the chormatic scale of a keyboard so when u try and play a 16 leveled patch on a controller, it dosent play like a piano(samples are out of order)

Again autochromatic this is a VERY VERY powerful feature when used correctly, i will go out on a limb and say it is probolly THE most powerful feature of the XL..... Most people dont understand it casue they have never used it...

And yea the new OS dosent have that on the 1000 nor does the 2500 have it. Only the XL and 4000 have it...

maybe ur confused I dont know if you know but u can achieve the same thing with the sliders

the only I repeat only thing diff. between auto chromatic and using the sliders is its automatically mapped over the pads or keys if ur using a controller in more than 16 increments

maybe u havent tried using ur slider with tune, its the same thing homey u can go up in pitch just as high and down as low just like using auto chrom

in music there is usually more than 1 solution to doing things

its no need to shoot other methods down cuz u dont use or know how to use them

we all just presented diff. methods of achieving the same thing so let the dude who asked the question pick which is best for him

and 16 levels is just the same if u wanna higher or lower pitch u can change the reference, yes it will take longer but its really not that different

dog aint nobody shutting down different was methods of doing things, I’m just stating facts, the 1000 and 2500 do not have the AUTO chromatic function.

i know it can be done manually with the sliders(or the data wheel). but u have to sit their and do it for each note, which defeats the purpose.

hence the AUTO in auto-chromatic, which was my whole point,

the beauty of auto-chromatic is the fact that U can just load a sample press a button and u have it mapped across the keys, that’s what makes it powerful, especially for composers, nobody wants to sit their and manually tune a sample of a piano note (sliders or not) for each key on ur controller…

dude asked if 16 levels was the same as autochormatic and i answered it, I dident tell him their werent ways around it, so stand back playboy....

On another note, ive noticed in a lot of threads that we both post in u always come off salty towards me. Maybe its just the way im reading it man but seriously seems like every time I post an opinion ur something u try and come and purposely contradict or under mind what im saying…. If u got a problem get at me…

I had a 2000 and I remember when the 2000xl came out that was a big feature, this basically allow you to take a sound and then take that sample and theoretically turn it into a semi tone multisample of the original sound then map to the controller like Classic said just like it was a synth patch.....I had 16 levels on my 2000 and 3000, but they didnt have that feature so its definitely a unique feature that the other mpc's dont have....but also you can arrive at the same point somewhat in a manual way by tuning etc but the feature makes it easier...
