A friend of mine just started beatmaking... He bought an MPC 1000 and thinks he could make beats. He cant. He got no sync and cant play a drum beat on the pads... so he bought a bootleg tutorial DVD were they where using a midi controller. So now he bought a midi controller.

I could care less that he succeeds or not in beatmaking, but the thing is, he asked me to help him, knowing that, since we're friends, I wouldn't say no... (I love to teach...gotta learn to say no... sigh...)

Now, I listened to his dvd and I think I got the basics. The problem I have is this

Is there a way to use the midi controller so it plays one sound (from one of the pads) while controlling its pitch?

The only way I saw how to do this was to actually program the MPC, taking one sound and putting it on every pad with different pitch... I hope there is a faster way to do this.

Come on guys!!!

I see a lot of new threads about the MPC and no one is answering my question...

Is it that obvious, too complicated or impossible?....

Been spending most of my time in the lounge...
Anyways, you need to have the same sound copied across multiple pads, change the tuning for each pad, plug in the keyboard and play. You'll also need to change the midi receive note for each pad if you want them to play in order from the controller.
You can get a program called blue box that sets this up for you.
There's also a cat named Stereoroid who made something called "blank melodic.pgm". This makes sure all the pads respond in order from a midi controller. It's a must have, google Steroroid and you'll find it.

PS - check out mpc-forums.com, ton of good info to be had from that sight...

make templates, its the easiest way

huh?

I'm a fl studio user, really... I,m just asking those questions to help out my boy, but I know squat about the mpc... except how to make a sequence, placing sounds on the pad, and make a song (by putting sequences together...which i found kinda wierd...)

By the way, while I'm at it... is there a way to make a copy of a sequence you did already... cuz if I want to do a little change up in a sequence, it looks like i gotta redo it all. And it seems like you cant really play 2 sequences together, like I would do in flstudio... right?

Write blank settings for your projects, empty midifiles but with fixed mid routings (for pc and mpc). Write blank midi templates for the mpc. Etc etc etc... you can do the same with FL or cubase, it's just a work protocol to get you started the convenient way when you got an instant idea.

The easiest way is with a PC and a flash card reader.
There's a program called Bluebox:

http://webpages.charter.net/dereese/gary/akai.html

It's so incredibly useful. There is an option to automatically pitch one sample across the pads of your choice. You can also make a change to one pad (like filter amount) and apply it to all of the pads.
You an also load fifty waves from Windows Explorer at one time, just select all, ctrl and drag onto the pad, save as a program, and load it right up in your MPC.
Best of all, it's free. You can donate a 10 or 20 to him if you got it like that, great work this kid did....

As for copying a sequence, just go to the top left corner, press open window, choose copy, choose OK.

I think what ur asking for is the autochomatic funtion and the MPC 1000 dosent have that, u would have to pitch the sample manuall for each note on the keyboard. THe 2000xl and the 4000 have an autochomatic funtion that creates a program of the sample(pitches it to each note on the keyboard) and allows you to play it on the keys, is this what u were asking??

You can't autochromatic on it automatically, but that Bluebox program let's you do it in a minute, same end result. The 1000 can load 24 different programs at one time (with 6000+ samples, 128mb), so you can have one autochromatic program, one drum program, one strings program, etc etc, sky's the limit...

I had the MPC2000 and the MPC60, for conveniene and sketching, the 1000 is hot. The portability and the flash cards close the deal for me.

People do hot beats on a SP1200 or SP303, no reason why you can't lay down some heat on that if you have the inspiration...at the end of the day it's about conveying emotion and what you got to get off your chest, not the gear....

^^^^ true. Actually, my main motivation in showing him how his mpc works is so he can lend it to me, so I can bang on those pads myself... looks fun!!! :)
