so ive had a pair of cheap M-audio studiophile dx4s in my room by my computer for about a month, and have been happy with the way they work and everything. yesterday i moved everything around a little bit, and when i plugged the monitors back in, and set them up, i get a wicked buzzing and a little crackling, and no sound, out of the right monitor, the one without the volume controll and power switch.

i tried it with no inputs running into the monitors, and i still get the low loud hum.

any ideas?

thanks in advance.

Edit: i tried to change the right speaker to a different monitor, and get the same result. so that means its the left one, the one that ;ugs into the wall... any suggestions? pls?

This could be your problem:

1) Loose audio cable somewhere. This could be anywhere in your signal. I like to go backwards in these steps:
-turn the speakers OFF
-unplug/plug in the monitors
-check the connection between the amps and speakers
-check the connection going to the amp/receiver from your mixer/computer/etc.

2) Ground hum. Did you move into another power outlet? (You should have everything in its own power outlet, with no lighting plugged in to the same outlet). Are you using a surge protector? Are you plugged into a two-prong outlet, and using a ground lift? (the usually orange plug that converts from a three-prong power plug to a two-prong). Is any lighting different? Are your speaker cables parallel to power cables? (putting them perpendicular to power cables can reduce ground hum).

I doubt it's your speakers. If there's a buzzing sound, then it's interference, and you can get rid of that with the tips I provided. There might be other problems, but let me know if this worked.

thanks for your help. i tried moving to to a outlet of its own with nothing else in it, and off a power strip, and got the same result.

the only thing that made me think it was the speakers was that i was getting absolutely no sound in the second speaker. i dont know though. ill take the time now to carefully try everything you mentioned, thanks a lot.

also, the speaker with the power running in works just fine, which makes me think it is a problem between that one and the other one.

thanks for your help.
