Module/keyboard expansion. Need advice!

Okay here goes.

My setup is Reason, rewired to ProTools (M-Box), with Behringer Truth Monitors, and a midi keyboard.

I want to expand and get some more sounds. I have 3 ideas, which all cost approx. the same.
1. Get new Triton Extreme keyboard or
2. Get new Motif Rack + Triton Rack or
3. Buy JV-1080 (with expansion cards), Motif 6 keyboard and perhaps Triton LE or Pro keyboard, used.

Now I'm used to making beats on my PC, and don't really need a keyboard sequencer. My main concern is getting the most, and best, sound as possible, and within a setup that isn't too complicated. For the same reasons, I'm considering the last 2 options the most.

I would therefore like to hear your comments. Do you have any of the hardware mentioned? What's your opinion on it? What do you know about the sounds in these hardware? Which setup would be easiest to handle? Etc etc...

I am looking for good acoustic instruments e.g. orchestral, vintage etc + the kind of synths used in mainstream rap and r&b.

u cant go wrong with the motif rack man. I got mine about a month ago and the more i use it the more im impressed. The sounds are incredible. It has USB and a program that allows u to edit and create new sounds on the computer and then store them on the rack. It also has room for 2 expainsion boards. Like i said i have been on it for a month and i still havent even scratched the surface.

Anybody also know what I would need to work the modules. I mean, I guess I need to add a midi interface to my setup, as well as perhaps get Sound Diver.

The Motif Rack and, say, a Roland Fantom XR should pretty well cover you completely. an xv 5050 would also be a solid choice, but if its in your price range, i say go with the Fantom XR- it comes with the librarian software, and you can download the whole xv 5080 module of sounds for free from roland. it also comes with a pc patch editor software disk, so you can edit your sounds on the computer screen via usb. the only REAL Motif advantages are its a little cheaper (about $400 cheaper) and has better rhodes/wurlitzr patches, organs and the solo violin/viola/cello are out of this world good, and the 6 insert effects. the roland has solid sounds in all areas, but an excellent piano, and the best orchestral sounds available, and the expansion cards are awesome.... each card is 64 mb. thats a huge library in one shot, $220. it takes 6 cards. plus, it has sampling whereas the motif has none. you cant go wrong with either, however, but the Fantom is the better overall module. if you can, score them both.

i owned a motif rack and extensively demo'd the fantom xr. i owned the roland xp 80, which has all of the jv1080 and 2080 sounds in the board. i worked extensively on a triton le, which isnt BAD board, it just doesnt really stack up against any of the other ones. it seems more like a $700 board to me. its really a waste when compared to the others, especially in terms of cost.

i say, Fantom XR and motif rack together. all your bases are covered ,with the roland holding the best available expansion options. the motif pianos have a darker, mobb deep feel. the guitars are better, but the roland COSM models are excellent and the unit can double as an outboard processer, which leads to some interesting things. they just have different feels. remember, with the xr, you can get the 5080 (a different patch set completely, with a few rehashed sounds for the newer model, i am sure) which is the 1080 x 10 basically for free plus the newer patches and expansions...

Thanks for the response Truth. I have heard a lot of good stuff about the 5080, but it's taken out of production. I can still buy it here, but it is mad expensive. I've only heard bad things when comparing the 5080 to the XR, so I'm curious to know if the XR still is better compared to the Triton rack (they cost the same here).

Also, I do want orchstral and vintage sounds, but I also really need some good synth leads and basses, in the genre of those you hear in some current rap and r&b. Any ideas on which module would satisfy my needs there?

I agree wit Class on the Motif Rack. The triton rack can be expanded but youd be paying for the sampler and all the other shit you dont need. Motif rack ( i think) is just sounds.

actually the fantom has plenty of what cope nedds... the motif doesnt have the strength of sound effects or or the synth and orchestral capabilities of the roland boards- ANY roland board xv on up, basically, because of the expansions.

i still say get the fantom xr AND the motif if you want to have the most COMPLETE library of sounds.

actually, i am holding off on that. you may actually get it befre i do! i am just going to finish up all that i have done thus far in terms of putting down vocals and finishing up my ep and demo.

Just buy racks..theres no need for keyboard workstations if you have a midi controller.

Racks have hidden sounds also =)

the motif rack. sounds incredible. i still don't know what the capabilities of it are. my understanding of it so far is that contains all the sounds that the keyboard has......ugh..that's it. i'm just learning

i guess it has something to do with what a sound module is. it sounds easy, but what is that, too...Holla at a newbie...thanks!

1. I'd get a Virus B, you can pimp out on a C, but the B is just as good and cheaper.

1.a. Or, dl the Albino2 demo VSTi Plugin by ROb Papen @ www.linplug.com , yeah demo , no joke, 150 Danish Euro's to buy, but sound the same as the Virus...

2. There's a pci dsp board by Korg called O.A.S.Y.S. , they come cheap IF you runn in to them. The pci is the engine for all products since the Wavestation up to the Tritons. IF you get what I'm saying...

This card is gold.

3. Yamaha VL synth, physical modeling synths recreating a lot of acoustic sounds, trust me, you dont know hehe.

Formant, are you recommending me VSTi's over hardware racks? If so, why? If you do not look at price (imagine they cost the same), do you think the possibilities are better with the VSTi's? and what about the Virus. I know someone who uses one, but the sounds sound very trance-like.

now i was a korg man, and used to drool all over the tritin studio and triton extreme. but when it comes to sounds, you cant go wrong with the motif es. i dont own it just yet! but its very likely i mite get one for christmas (still savin up and hustling beats).
the mega voices in it are just ridiculous, basically the organic sounds are the best on the market. ive played around with the fantom x and sound wise i dont think it comes close to the motif es. it however has a much better interface and has easier navigation. but since you wont be sequencing on a board, id go with yamaha, even tho the tiny screen sucks.
dont even think about getting the triton extreme, the sounds are not exactly worth the price. all that touch screen stuff makes it very costly to make, so i guess korg spend less on r&D for sounds.

because the es sounds are waaaay more advanced, and there are more of them. they also used completely new wave forms. it realy is a huge step up from the motif and motif rack. it also has a completely new orchestral bank.
