sort of

I've been playing the drums since 95. The last few years i have incorporated elements of funk jazz and hip-hop into my style. I also play a bunch of other instruments(Bass, Guitar, Keys, Harmonica)

I'm trying to get into this whole producing thing cause i hear music in my head all the time and i gotta get out. I've messed around with soundfore and acid but they aint doin for me

I just dl the trail version of fruity loops but that shit looks intimidating.

Any suggestions or tips on producing. ie software/hardware/informative sites

Welcome to one of the best forums on the net. I am sure you will find more than enough advice on your beats. Post something up in the showcase.

Based on what you just posted...I gotta say...based on my personal experience...when you are new and naive, its better to read and listen then to talk alot and put your ass out there to get destroyed.

For example, you said Fruity Loops looks intimidating. There are about a hundred ass heads on this forum who think Fruity Loops ARE fruity and would rip you a new one and ask you to step out the game for typing that. Just read as many posts as you can and you'll see what I mean.

Keep working hard on it though. We all started out with the urge to get these beats out of our heads.

As far as hardware, you'll hear MPC 2000 or ASR10. That's a little expensive with a learning curve. Software? Fruity ain't too bad. Hard to get respect for beats done with it though. Reason 2.5 is cheap but good. You might be able to find a free copy online somewhere. Protools and Cubase. Cost money but they are industry standard depending on who you ask.

I have a few beats at here. If your beats aren't better than this then step with caution cuz all my beats got destroyed in this forum. You should check the Beat This section of this site too.

Yo thanx for the advice.....i checked out your beats. They ain't that bad. I liked the second one but it did get a little repetitive. But i haven't done anything better so i'm gonna stop there. Do you know of any other good websites?

LETS NOT GO AND AVDERTISE OTHER SITES, OR I WILL BE FORCED TO KILL YOU. ILLMUZIK IS ALL THERE IS TO IT WHEN IT COMES TO GETTIN SLAMMIN ADVICE FOR MAKING HOT, PHATT TRACKS NO MATTA WHAT YOUR STEEZ... ILLMUZIK IS THE PLACE FOR BANGIN HIP HOP SKILLZ.........................................hahahaahahhhhhhhhhhh i was just thinkin about how lame these adds are for equipment (especially emu products) ... dont really know why! hey if you have the skills with all those live instruments, i would suggest getting one of the roland computer mixing rigs..... not to start another boring software/hardware, "original"/sample debate, but if you DO have those talents, i would suggest making the most of-and expanding on them. do you own a bass, drums, guitar? all you would need to round that out is a good, all around rack synth to add to the mix.... just a thought....i mean that would give you a bit of an edge because most cats do not have the knowledge of live instrumentation. the drums might be a bit difficult but all you would need is a software program to lay out a basic pattern and then you would play live over that and replace that in the final mixes, plus you could have a live feel (as far as playing) and layer hip hop drums over it (or whatever you prefer) i dunno it just seems like you would have a great deal of versatility there... but then i dont know how serious you are, or how much $$ you got...

yeah i do own all those instruments plus a lot of random percussion shit. what is this roland computer mixing rig you speak of? Like just a standard mixing board? Anyway you bring up a good point of mixing the two live beats with programmed beats behind it. That shit would sound cool. I know roland just released or is releasing some type of sampler. Damn i gotta get off my ass and make some money for this shit. OH well thanx for the tips. It's much appreciated

Peace

This is the recording rig i was talking about. i would consult a local dealer and maybe see if you can get a demo, let you play with it.... if i were you this how i would go (again, if you have the money)...how much $$$ are you workig with? remember, that determines a lot..... so you want the get the best thing suited for your needs in the price range you are dealing with.......
