it happens to everybody i think. you just hit a brickwall and everything you make sounds wack to you. it will come back around though..when i hit a brickwall i just start listening to records for samples and just sample mad shit and wont even make a beat until im feeling it, read my manuals for stuff i havent picked up on yet just to know as much as i can about my equipment. about the wack mcs part, theyll come around and youll find someone you can just vibe with, im the same way when im making beats, if i dont have someone there pushing me telling thats hot or thats wack i usually just get stuck on my beat and just make loops, then when someone comes i fix it up and complete the beat.

I agree with mark of a beat. I mean it happens to me too a lotta times. Sometimes i'll be fuckin around all week all day all night to be lazy the next. Do enything that can relax you or feed your mind. Play video games. Man trust me, you better to play games 5 hours and day and work with fun 3 hours, than to work 8 hours pushin yourself. The result will be better if your in good mood. It's the same as training:its 80% nutrition.

I think it's better to do one perfect beat than 10 unfinished ideas (i deleted 300 beats unfinished lately). I'll never get back on em even if i say so.

And for your problems with mc, the only thing i could say is to try stylin around wut is hot out there. If you don't like, it doesnt matter. The effort you'll put to explore another world will give you skills for everything after. All you do is knowledge. And if after a while, you reallay can't stand it, stick to your roots.

Hope that could help.

Holla Ace

listen to stuff that you grew up on... the shit that got you into makin it in the first place... that's what I do.

I agree with ace too, try utilizing the talent that is, and you can only get better at it... try getting some music from the south, older and new, and try to swing your style that way for a bit... you can only go one way, and that's up

man im just like you. When i had my ace (my rap artist) around while i was making beats i could tell by the way his head would move or the way he would out of the blue pick up a pen and pad and start writing that the beat i was working on was a good one. Now days he aint around, and im all by myself making beats so i have learn to trust my own judgement on if its hot or not, and even if i feel its not hot i still keep it cause whats hot to one might not to another, and whats not hot to one might be hot to another. Like old boy said about when he hits the brick wall he starts to read books on his gear or listen to music, i do that myself too. Now days i really slow down my production to train my ear and learn how to play the piano. Also ive been taking all my drum sounds and making new ones or tring to create my own type of sound. Overall i been taking a break and getting ready to make a big run for the top and that starts with sound i want to produce. I have been tweaking and creating new sounds in my motif es and layering drums in my mpc and playing the piano and listing to a lot of real instrument playing type of music. I dont need to make a beat to know that im getting better cause im starting to be able to come up with things in my head and write them down on paper and then play them later, this is something i couldnt do before. Im tring to make myself stronger before i turn on my equipment this way i dont hit the brick wall as offten as i did before.

For one thing, if your new to Tampa, one rule for there is:
LOCK YOUR SHIT UP!
I guess the more your in Tampa, the sooner youll learn that. But other than that. Try this:
-Pull just 1 record out of a crate. and make 5 Different Beats out of it.
-When your just about done all 5, listen to all of them and see if theres any little riffs or sounds that you put in, that your not feelin, and take them completely out of your beats (even if it took you an hour to get it chooped up just right).
-Then try to put another riff in that your feelin, even if it takes you a long time.
-Work on your beats til there pretty much done, and delete the ones that you are keeping just because you think you know an MC who would like it. (Only do shit for yourself, Onlykeep shit that your feelin, and dont think about nobody else!)
-Repeat that whole cycle every day for 2-3 Weeks.

By the time youve done this for 2-3 Weeks, youll have a shitload of beats that your not feelin. OR if you deleted the ones that not feelin, and kept only the ones that you were, youll have about 10-15 beats that your proud of.

ITs a lot of work but you wont be as lazy any more.
You wont have a load of beats your not feelin.
Youll be out of the brickwall/i-hate-my-beats mood.
And youll be a lot more conservative with records.

Whenever i get that feeling, i know its only because im not doin beats for myself. Its because im tryin to impress people but its not workin. Do shit for yourself. Thats why Outkast is so successful, they do what there feelin and they really dont give a shit if you like it. And people are feelin that attitude so they get respect. ITs real complicated, but its worth tryin.

PEACE
GOOD LUCK

I produce less over the years, I get more selective and plan projects ( tracks etc ) instead of sitting behind a pc working on a impulsive tip. I've also learned to work with libraries I set up before I actualy start pre production work, which starts with creating templates, samples and and sample kits, making presets (patch programming). So, at the time I want to start ( pre production ) on this project I have all needed material edited, normalised, sampled, whatever is neccesary fixed and ready for use. It takes some time but then again, I work out material for more than one track in a library. It's like everything I need for a month or 3, till I need or want a new library. It works (time) efficient that way and it prevents me from a writers block since I work on project I had in mind for a while, so I know exactly what I want before pre production.

AND! make usefull templates, save settings etc that sound good or usefull.

On the mc tip,

You're online, why bother with your surrounding if you can find good mc's on the net. If your production are good, chances are you'll be approached by whoever is appealed by your productions.

On the other hand, if you only get that dirty south something you dont want then maybe you should reconsider your steelo hehehe (jk)
