im trying to decide which one to use here ..... ive used live before and i liked it, although ive never really sequenced anything with it before. Ive heard alot of good things about logic too.. I have pro tools latest version and my interface will still be the digi 002. The thing i like about live is that u can rewire it into pro tools which is cool. But logic (from what i read) seems to be a little more advanced in terms of composition. and from what i hear logic has way more shit for $500 than live does in terms of instruments and whatnot. Regrdless, I will still record vocals and "mix" in pro tools, but im looking to make and arrange my beats in one of these two programs.. i will be running these on a macbook. any suggestions?

I have Logic and it's unbelievable how much shit comes with it. It's a steeper learning curve but totally worth it. Over all I think you will give yourself a lot more options with Logic.

I think a lot of mac based studios that arent using Pro Tools are using Logic.
Being as I dont use either myself Im not really qualified to reply, but I have been to a couple studios that do use Logic.
And then again you can always try before you buy and see what one suits you best.

Coming from someone who has both the latest logic and ableton live 7 and since you've already stated that you'll still be using Pro Tools, I say go with ABLETON LIVE 7. It's exactly what I'm using on my new MacBook. Hip Hop producers are really really slippin' by not checking Ableton. I actually just got Pro Tools 7.4 yesterday and since it's been awhile since I used Pro Tools ( haven't used it since digi 001 lol ) I'm currently watching tutorials so I can get up to speed fast. I will be and have been using Ableton 7 rewired with Reason 4 for composing my beats and I'll rewire Pro Tools to it for vox. U can record vox in Ableton Live but you'll get into some serious processor slow down and u may get a delay unless you do the necessary tweaking. Ableton is a beast as far as producing Ash.... trust me on that!

It's my number one "go to software". I even DJ with it. I freak people out when I show up at a DJ gig with my laptop and a keyboard...lol. I'm cutting and scratching with a keyboard. Doing scratch techniques that Dj's with tables can't even do. I got 1200's and serato but I have more fun with Ableton Live 7.

Ableton Live 7, Axiom 25, M-Audio Fast Track Pro, Pro Tools 7.4 and my 500G firewire hard drive and I can stick and move stick and move....lol. I'm loving my new set up!

You'll will have to tweak your MacBook in order to have everything flow seemlessly! I got a tweak sheet if you need it. U need to tweak you Mac no matter which way you decide to go!!!!!

P.S. One of the reasons I'm using Pro Tools as opposed to Logic is that I set my MacBook up to dual boot the Mac os and Windows XP. 90 percent of my software is for the PC so having everything I use on one operating system works better for me. Logic is extra nice but in my humble opinion its better used for recording and not composing. And yes, it has a serious learning curve that can be very frustrating at times. When I go to the "big studio" my engineer uses LOGIC with all the bells an whistles but even he says he only uses it for recording.

^^^ appreciate it...

yeah im def recording vox in pro tools, and doing mixing, automation etc.. in pro tools... i basically need the best app for just cranking out beats and composing. I prefer keeping it simple.. logic overall is cheaper though which is a factor for me especially with all this fear factor promo and pressing that we are doing at the moment. The version of live with all the vsts included is like $700 compared to logic $500. ive heard live has a better workflow but logic is just more powerful and complete.....desicions, decisions .... ..

Get Logic Pro for 500 and a bunch of tutorials from macprovideo.com for about 300 and you'll be up and running in a day. This was a dope vid showing a vet who uses Logic for mixing:

You can trade some of you other equipment and maybe get store credit at Guitar Center or something. I think Logic is slept on. Dallas Austin's engineer uses nothing but Logic. If you go to Apples site, you get to see a lot of people who use it.

logic...ultrabeat ^^ haha slept on, most studio worthy of mentioning have pt, a neve or ssl, standard industry requirements like the genelec 1031a's or ns10 are because you have to, but most of these very experienced engineers always have one unit running logic lol. logic's rendering engine is way better than live...live as name already states work good live ...on a pa system, when mixing or mastering isnt that relevant as live is an intuitive program in regards to looping...but as a main its hell, tidious midi interface and the audio engine isnt transparant enough, too much significance like someone might recognize a track made solely in reason.

I use both. Logic I mainly use for production (composing and etc). With Live, I like to incorporate it with DJ'n so I can do live recordings and remixes such as instrumentals & acapellas because Live analyzes the BPM on most songs and sync it up automatically. But sometimes, it doesn't really work that way and you gotta go adjust it manually.

Both softwares are good in its own way. It depends what you're going to be using it for. Overall, Logic is great for producing and mastering your projects and Live is good for live sessions. It doesn't hurt to have the best of both worlds

I have seen live, but havent tried it myself, so I am biased towards logic. The learning curve to be honest is not as big as people think, especially if you just want to lay down some beats. You could be making full beats in as little as a week. I got comfortable with it in a few days. If you have already been producing, you sort of have a grip of the underlying principles so it wont take long till you are back to your old speed. In fact, Logic 8 is now even easier to learn since Apple simplified the GUI slightly. Best value for money IMO, considering the amount of high quality plugins you get with it.

As for Ableton, I hear Dj's swearing by it. Seems to be good for sampling and chops. I don't think there is anything you can do in it you can't do in Logic aswell though.

If you use the MacBook's bootcamp and throw xp on your joint I'll hit u with thousands of dollars worth of vsti and effects. I either already have or have access to the top plugins out there. The only catch is that most are for pc so you'd have to throw XP on your Mac.

I don't know if you'll get the "necessary" vsti plugins with Logic to produce in the genre that you do. I don't know what that package comes with. I'm almost sure it doesn't come with the plugins that I hit u up on your IM's about. The best ones for hip hop and RnB are on the list I sent u. If Logic has those then you'll be straight....if not you'll end up spending some change to get what works for what you do.

WARP alone sets it apart from logic when it comes to beat making. No other programs has that technology, only Ableton 7. If u ever use it I promise u won't work without it again. lol. It takes sampling to a whole other level....real talk! I still like Logic....its just not worth me freaking now that I have a program that can do what most others wish they could. If all I did was record Logic would be my programs of choice! I know it's hard to phantom but once u really know Ableton you'll be saying "now why don't they make everything this fluid and easy"....one window with everything u need right there. No clicking this or learning this keyboard short cut to get to where u want to go....it's straight Genius if u ask me.

tell'em LDB. i've been hooked on that ableton WARP for years. best tool in music producing today. I swear by Live. the only software that made me sell my ASR. if it could handle recording vox better i wouldn't need anything else.

Exactly the way I feel. That one feature alone is so far ahead of anything else I've encountered that there's no way I'd move to another program. Every time I show cats what it can do they get hooked as well. One of my DJ homies spent 10 stacks just under a year ago on new equipment and now 85% of it is collectiing dust. Every time I see him he can't stop talking about Live!

LDB - you gotta do a video of you djing / cutting / remixing with Live, you got me intrigued...

I guess I could do that. I think dudes would get a better understanding of why some of us swear bY it if I did. I"ll try and work on that next week and get it up.

Word! If it wasn't for the ability to have two operating systems I would have passed up on getting the MacBook...that was the deciding factor for me. Now I got the best of both worlds. Windows XP and Leopard....PRICESLESS!!!
