Just thought youd like to know , he announced it New Years eve or somthing..
Chuck D syas he wants the job.. Id like that.

http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur39605.cfm

*Public Enemy rapper Chuck D is already throwing his hat into the ring at Def Jam to succeed Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter as president.

The lyricist, whose real name is Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, was an artist under Def Jam from 1987 to 1998 and gave the label some of its biggest hits as front man for the fiery rap group, Public Enemy.

"After 10 years looking on the collapsing of the record industry, and upon hearing the news of Jay-Z stepping down from Def Jam, I would throw my name into the hat of somebody who understands how the hell Universal should establish the name-brands they acquire with stockholders money," Chuck D told AllHipHop.com.

The rapper, who also runs his own label Slam Jamz, says a position at Def Jam would allow him an opportunity to reach the masses.

"So instead of me running for politics, this is an easier run into the world of influential culture," he said. "I'm in Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York on the regular as well as I [thoroughly understand] the international picture. There would be some seismic changes, and I would be a little Huey Long-ish at it. If folks are clueless about this parallel that's precisely the problem."

According to Allhiphop.com, Jermaine Dupri, Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemond and Damon Dash have all been mentioned as potential candidates for the Def Jam position.

Chuck D offered the following plan of attack if appointed Def Jam President:

1) Being ahead of the technology curve; preparing for a thinned out industry; and managing budget efficient acts is very noteworthy of my resume which is simple. I told these cats the online revolution was coming and they needed big adjustments. They relied on lawyers, courts, and accountants only to now look upward at Apple, etc.

2) Their cost factors didn't fit the times, I come from a world where the $50,000 investments resulted into 6 - 7 figures. Now it's a business where 7 figures are invested to make 6.

3) I would run it like sports. These artists would be busting their tails on tour and on the stage to gain a fan. They would be coached on how to do their thing right. Braintrust will be high, and subcontracting to the right contributors will be comparable of the efficiency of these labels like Jazz and catalog departments. You cannot have people working, that haven't the slightest clue of what they are in the middle of.

4) Any criminal mindedness in artistry, and management would have sit this one out, go their own way. It's like bad apples the long run ain't got nothing to do with entertainment. You can't mix the stage and off stage parodies.

I don't know any new or recent artist that Chuck has brought into the game. That is definitely a prerequisite for the position. Jay brought all his artist over with him and he managed a multi million dollar clothing line. Jay did big things that I can't see Chuck doing. If your hopes is that he'd bring a new level of consciousness and the old 90's feel forget it. Def Jam has always stood for innovation not re-creation of a sound that had it's reign.

Def Jam will go after new blood. I love Chuck but I can't see him taking Def Jam forward. The new Prez is already on Def Jams staff I'm sure. Don't be surprised if Luda's name doesn't come up as at least Vp. DTP as a label has been very successful. Luda should have been over Def Jam South instead of Face. If you haven't had success running your own label "like Chuck hasn't" forget it!

JUST MY OPINION!

Nah I agree with you LDB , bu t seriously they dont NEED an artist running shit at all.
They need to have someone in business doin it.

I agree with that, someone who's not trying to put out his own album. I think D Dash would be the best canidate for the job, at this time anyway.

Considering the current Def Jam roster (basically a bunch of commercial clowns with a few exceptions), I DON'T think Chuck would be a good fit. Also , DefJam has way too many sub-brands (Roca-fella, Def Soul, etc ...). This dilutes the identity of the Label and I think the new CEO needs to adress this issue.

Heres the article I read when I got up this morning...
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/artic...m_medium=email&utm_campaign=Newletter Dec. 31

Though he'll always be President Carter in our hearts, as of December 31, Jay-Z will no longer hold the position of President of Def Jam Recordings, according to various sources. He made the announcement on Christmas Eve; Variety reports that he made the following statement: "Now it's time for me to take on new challenges. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy."

According to The New York Times, Jay-Z's Presidential exit was caused by money matters. His current contract expires at the end of 2007, and Universal (Def Jam's parent company) "declined to renew the contract under more lucrative terms he sought."

Although Jigga won't be Def Jam's head honcho anymore, he will still record for the label, and has plenty of other activities to keep him busy. He's one of the owners of the New Jersey Nets basketball team, he oversees the 40/40 nightclub empire, and, of course, he's Beyoncé's boyfriend.
But now that he's quit his main day job, Jay's doing what any good multi-millionaire would do in his first days of freedom: he's going to Vegas, bay-bee. He'll perform at the Pearl at the Palms on December 29.

aren't there also rumors that apple is doing something to revolutionize music by creating it's own distribution/recording company that will only be available online? that would definitely be a possible move for jigga to be the head of such a project (from a PR standpoint)

Well to that I say Haze 47 and wings and those guys have already been doing this.
Only way Jay or Apple is gonna completely bite that anymore is give away they shit for free. I am now believing that this may be the only way starting soon.
Honestly its going back to the 40's soon. You just give away the records as a novelty and let people pay to see you preform. Only way to get paid. Make em like you enough to pay to see it live..Then dont charge alot so they will come and hope enough show up that you can pay rent. lol..
Hey better know now that being a musician means not being rich generally.
