Pregnant teen dies after being shot at bus stop, newborn being treated at hospital

CHARLOTTE - A pregnant teen has died after being shot in the head Monday morning at a bus stop.

Police shut down Mallard Creek Road in north Charlotte between Sugar Creek Road and Harris Boulevard after the shooting just before 6 a.m. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe told WSOC Eyewitness News a relative had just walked the victim out to the bus stop and walked back home. That relative then heard at least three gunshots and went outside to find the victim laying in the street.

Tiffany Wright, who would have turned 16 on Nov. 4, was 32 weeks pregnant at the time of the shooting, according to police. The baby has been delivered and is currently being treated at Carolinas Medical Center.

Wright died a short time after being shot. Police found her lying in the street with the gunshot wound.

Responding officers immediately began setting up a perimeter around the neighborhood to search for a suspect. Detectives are aggressively working the case and several promising leads.

Homicide, Robbery, Fraud, Auto Theft, Sexual Assault, Gang and Firearms Unit detectives; with the assistance of University City Division officers conducted a neighborhood canvass. Crime Scene Search responded, photographed the scene and collected physical evidence. In addition to canvassing the neighborhood several specialized units are assisting with the investigative leads as they develop.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A pregnant teen who was shot at her school bus stop in northeast Charlotte early Monday morning has died as a result of her injuries.

The shooting was in the 6700 block of Mallard Park Drive and occurred just before 6 a.m.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the victim is 15-year-old Tiffany Wright. Police spokesman Rob Tufano said Wright attends a special needs school.

The teen's foster mother said she went inside the house to get Wright a glass of water. The foster mother told police she heard at least three gunshots. When she went outside, she discovered that Wright had been shot.

When police officers arrived, they found the victim lying on the street suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.

"Witnesses heard a car speeding away after the shooting, but we don't have a good description of the car at this time," CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe said.

Wright was 32 weeks pregnant, police said.

She was critically injured and transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main. Doctors managed to save the child's life but were unable to save the teen mother.

Dozens of police officers are canvassing the neighborhood and are following up on leads, police said. However, police have not been able to identify a motive for the shooting at this time.

A 15-year-old pregnant high school student was shot and killed Monday morning while standing at a school bus stop near her home in north Charlotte, police say.

The girl's unborn baby was delivered safely at Carolinas Medical Center a few hours after the shooting.

The girl, Tiffany Wright, was 32 weeks pregnant. She was an 11th-grader at Hawthorne High School, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials say. Hawthorne offers a special program for pregnant students and those with young babies.

Early Monday afternoon, police told reporters that they believe the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute, and they indicated that they were looking for a suspect.

The shooting happened about 6 a.m. in the 6700 block of Mallard Creek Road, between Sugar Creek Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard. Police said they responded to a report of a shooting and found Wright in the street, shot in the head.

The girl was taken by Medic to CMC, where she died.

The baby, a girl, was listed in critical condition at CMC on Monday afternoon.

WBTV is reporting that the girl's foster mother had walked the girl to the bus stop but had gone back home to get the girl a glass of water. When she returned, WBTV says, she discovered that the girl had been shot.

"A relative heard what sounded like three or four shots," police Chief Rodney Monroe said Monday morning.

Tiffany Wright lived on Walnut Park Drive, off Mallard Park Drive and Mallard Creek Road.

Police closed Mallard Creek Road for several hours and set up a perimeter in the area, looking for a possible suspect or suspects. Mallard Creek Road was reopened late this morning, but police continued searching the area for several hours afterward, even using a helicopter.

Ashelee Barber, who said she was a niece of Tiffany Wright's foster mother, said Tiffany had managed to keep a positive outlook on life, despite having dealt with a number of problems.

"She was just a very sweet girl," said Barber, a college freshman. "I assume she was going through a lot of stuff.

"When people go through tough times, they sometimes develop hateful feelings, but she wasn't that way."

Tracey Pickard, Hawthorne High's principal, said Tiffany Wright came to the school in August as a student in the TAPS program for pregnant students. She said the girl had impressed teachers.

"It was clear that Tiffany was academically strong and off to a good start," Pickard said. She said the girl's teachers told her that Tiffany "was extremely focused."

Fellow students at Hawthorne High School Monday afternoon remembered Wright as a smart, friendly girl who did well in school and was always sweet.

"She always had a smile on her face," said Cameron Blakeney, a sophomore who met her at the movies last summer. "She loved to joke. I'm like, devastated, like a lot of people," Blakeney said. "We're all pretty torn up on the inside."

CMS superintendent Peter Gorman arrived at the school about 1:15 p.m. to make sure district crisis teams were in place and helping, "students who may be in a fragile condition."

Pastor Gregory Moss of St. Paul Baptist Church, near Hawthorne, also came to the school Monday afternoon to offer counsel to any students in need. He said helping young people cope with violence can be difficult in a society that seems saturated with it.

"A lot of these young people have become desensitized," he said. "Our idea is to help them have hope."

CMS officials say a security officer rode home on the bus this afternoon, to help students feel safe. Extra security will be provided at the bus stop and at Hawthorne High School over the next several days.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police are questioning the 36-year-old stepbrother of a pregnant teenager who was shot to death while waiting for her school bus early Monday.

Detectives said Royce Anthony Mitchell turned himself in on a statutory rape charge Monday afternoon. Police said he’s accused of raping 15-year-old Tiffany Wright at his house in northwest Charlotte in July.

Mitchell has worked for the city's street maintenance department since August 2007. He is on federal probation for a drug conviction in New York for which he served five years in prison.

His wife and other family members were seen leaving the police station in uptown Charlotte a short time after he arrived with his lawyer. At this time, Mitchell has not been charged with murder.

Police said Wright was 32 weeks pregnant when she was shot in the head on Mallard Creek Road between Sugar Creek Road and Harris Boulevard in north Charlotte. Doctors were able to deliver her baby, which is currently being treated at Carolinas Medical Center.

Hospital spokeswoman Katie Ratchford said the baby was in critical condition.

Police said Wright’s foster mother had just walked her out to the bus stop and walked back home. The woman then heard at least three gunshots and went outside to find teen lying in the street just before 6 a.m.

“She was the only one at the bus stop at the time,” said Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Chief Rodney Monroe.

A few hours after the shooting, Monroe said detectives suspected the slaying was domestic related.

Early Monday, officers set up a perimeter around the neighborhood to search for the gunman after a witness reported seeing a car speeding away from the scene. Officers from a number of CMPD units were on the scene talking to residents, collecting evidence and following leads until about 11 a.m.

Neighbors said they’re upset by the violence.

“It’s really a shock to me because this is a pretty good neighborhood,” said Angela Thorpe.

“That’s terrible,” said Charles Alexander. “I didn’t even know. I just woke up and left the house and now I see all (these officers).”

Wright attended Hawthorne High School, a school with a special program for pregnant teens in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. A CMS spokeswoman said extra counselors and psychiatrists were brought to the school Monday to help grieving teachers and students.

"It's been a rough day. Everyone was teary eyed. It was just a rough day," said Keyosha Buchanan, one of Wright's classmates.

The school only has a few hundred students, and Monday morning’s slaying comes only a month after another Hawthorne student was shot and killed in the street.

JaRon McGill, 19, was gunned down in early August. He attended Hawthorne last year. No arrests have been made in his death.

Students, overwhelmed by both deaths, are now talking about ways to memorialize their two classmates.

"People put up a 'Rest in Peace Tiffany and JaRon' sign in the cafeteria. People signed it," said student Antonio Harden.

"We want to have a memorial service for all the students who died at Hawthorne, like plant a tree for them or have a little place with all their names on it," said Markisha Moore.
