I tried searching the web for more about this track other than this song was produced by Diddy and the Hitmen......seriously?
I love the track but I must be honest, I've been spoiled with listening to Jay over Just Blaze beats. I'm not on JBs dick, jus that the sample is JB-esque. This song sounds like someone tried to recreate a just blaze track but came up short. I felt EXACTLY the same way when I heard Jay Z - "Show me what you got" that Just Blaze produced and the similar record on puff's (forgettable) Press Play "We gon make it" track that D-Dot did. After listening to the two, I decided that Just had a PhD and D. Dot was just out of pre-school. No comparison. JB, especially on the drums, was incredible.
"Roc Boys" is dope, lyrics to me are on point, but if you take the time to listening to it and anlyzing pure production, you can almost hear how JB would have made that into a monster track. Something was missing on the production - I can't quite put my finger on it. For a second I thaught maybe Jay wanted the track to sound empty sounding - to give that nostalgic feel. I'm not trying to compare apples with oranges...the differences in producers and techniques make tracks great in their own respective right but I have to question, why would you go with the hitmen when you got JB in your back pocket?....must be some favor to puff. Still a hot track.
