First I wish the dude rests in peace.

I've noticed that ever since Dilla's passing, people have sucked his dick pretty hardbody saying he's one of the greatest ever.....


I'm a fan of some of his music and his approach to production, but I don't even think he's top 10... People have posted (not in here but on youtube videos) that dilla is BETTER than Premier...(not going there...)



It's just became 2pac all over again...dude was a good artist until he died, then he became the greatest of all time....Just think people feel sorry for them and put them on this pedestal...

What I find most weird about Dilla, maybe not so much Dilla but the people that love him, is...

He had a very experimental sound. And then I see other people experiment and get shitted on for doing similar things with their production. But the same people who love Dilla will not accept experimentation from others.

I personally have not had the problem because at no point in time am I comparing myself to Dilla's level of talent. But I just see it happen to other heads, A LOT.

Honestly the more I listen to Dilla, the more I loved his overall style. I think the reason why everyone now loves him after he died is because not everyone really even knew much about him. I never personally listened to his music before he died, I just never heard of him.

I do think he is definitely in the top 10 for sure, the amount of music he's made in that amount of time is incredible.

Just my opinions, feel like I gotta defend one of my favorites. BTW his melodies are some of the ILLEST.

I feel you on that, Q.... I just feel that if he was still around making music, he wouldn't have the buzz he has now.

And don't get me wrong, it is much deserved....he was a beast....

And Ominous..his style was experimental..and it worked.. it's funny how those people who shit on others who make experimental shit...

I like some experimental shit..just not the outlandish type.....Dilla's tracks were still hip-hop, not veering off into some new sub-genre...which is why I enjoy some of his music...

For the record... I live Dilla and he is the reason I was able to drive all the fukn way to AZ from TN on one 24 hour shot and then back again 3 days later. I just zoned out to a lot of his instrumentals.





I got a friend that does this kind of shit. He'll say something like, "I didn't really like Iron Man." And then 2 hours later he'll come off the wall with some shit like, "Dude, cats is sleeping on this Buffy the Vampire Box Set."

DILLA WAS ONE OF THE FIRST TO USE CLAPS IN HIP HOP BEATS...Most cats here hate beats with claps in um...Dilla is one of the illest though. I've always been a Preemo head...but I can tell PREEMO SHIT OFF THE GATE. Dilla snuck in under the radar on me...what makes it so bad it that I did'nt know he influenced so much Tribe and Pharcyde shit until a few years back...(I thought Ali Shaheed Muhammad made ALL of their beats)

As my boy's Mom says, I must have a whole lot on my mind. LOL

My friends try and throw an annual camping trip and so far we have done it a few years in a row. I'm not a big camper but every time I go I have a blast. We basically caveman it up and drink and smoke a bunch of shit. Its the only time I ever drunk or smoke. Its like a reset button for me. Well this year was supposed to be so good that I couldn't miss it. One of my friend's parents owns a boat and 2 Jetski's. So we all met up at this place called Willow Lake. I guess everyone was at Lake Mead so we had the whole lake to ourselves.

Shit was off the chain.

Only thing that sucked was the 2 Rattle Snakes I found.

So yeah. I drove all the way out for that. It was worth it. And the main reason I did it is because for some reason, listening to music in the car is the best place for me to really hear it. So I listened to a lot of beat tapes and stuff to really get focused. Lots of Dilla. LoDeck. Even a bunch of cats from these forums and other forums whose beats I collect and listen to.

I will probably fly from now on though. Trucker gas Stations are the fukn worse!

he IS one of the most relevant hiphop producers period. what you mean hes not top 10 ? dude ignited the whole neo-soul scene with the ummah and influenced lots of modern broken beat type stuff (which btw already has a major influence on the global club scene, electronic music and lots of mainstream pop beats. for instance, delayed kicks and snares are everywhere right now).
there may be some overenthusiastic dilla heads as well as there are people who dont feel his stuff at all. doesnt change his groove's impact on the global music scene. the drums he sampled, how he played hats, his rhythm, how he flipped or just looped stuff, unprecedented talent...

i was a Dilla fan long before i knew who Dilla was, i had everything that the far side and umhahh did (as well as all his remixes) i used to dub his shit on the radio back in 96. I dident find out who dilla actually was until late 2001 when i got introduced to slum village.

Point being, i think dilla is THE dude when it comes to production because he influenced so many aspects of the craft.(drums,sound,sample) He had many different phases as well, from his neo soul jay dee phase to his more hardcore ruff draft madlib stuff, to his later experimental donuts stuff..

He casts a large shadow, and he was one of the few cats to do it on his own terms. he dident come out with a catchy signature sound like dre, he dident have a static signature sound(dj premire). He was constantly moving and growing and chose to work with the cats that HE wanted to..

So with that being said alot of people dident appericate him until his death..

He is the only hip hop producer that i know of that has influenced seasoned musicians with his sound(quest love, D'angleo, Robert glasper, various jazz players)

so yea, are alot of people on dillas nuts, of course.. but i think this is one of the few cases where its actually deserved...

@ Skidflow, yeah, you can always tell Premo off the gate. Dilla was just on that other shit. But really two different eras. Gangstarr was out in 89 (no more mr nice guy). Premier came from what I call the hybrid producer (started as a dj; later became a producer). Some other examples include Pete Rock and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Anyway, Dilla was more soulful and didn't really hit the scene until 93 doin Pharcyde shit.

I'm not here to argue about which one was better, but Pharrel used Dilla's Electric Circus (Common) as a template for Common's Universal Mind Control...NEVER seen that done before.

I liked the stuff Dilla did with Pharcyde, LOVED the Coming (Busta), but did not enjoy Beats, Rhymes, and Life as compared to the first 3 Tribe efforts. My fav JD beat is Make Em Envy off my fav JD album Ruff Draft.

I gotta say tho-my fav producer of all time is Pete Rock. My fav track of his is The World Is Yours (Nas)

I can't speak for everyone else but I have liked J Dilla's music since the first time I heard Slum Village. I then rushed out and got everything he ever produced. Actually, I started liking his beats when he was part of "The Ummah". As far as experimental stuff, that's always what I look for. Madlib is da shit IMO. As far as he being better than Premier, they are different types of producers. I won't compare them just say they are both dope in their own way. RIP Jay Dee aka J. Dilla.
