WEEK 5 - Chord Inversions
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------

Tasks

There's not much this week. Also, please note, this is the last lesson for now. Orginally it was supposed to be 9, but the last two lessons on the reference site are not as important at this point, not until you have at least cracked all the other lessons down solid! The last 2 lessons by the way were about the notation and playing the 12 bar blues.

1. Learn what it means for a chord to be in first inversion
i.e the 3rd of a triad is the first, so instead of C-E-G for a C major chord,
you have E-G-C

2. Learn what it means for a chord to be in second inversion
i.e the 5th becomes the first tone, so you would have G-E-C

The above is with triad chords. With 7ths, 13ths etc, the combinations are bigger. If you are making a beat and some of the chords you are playing sound generic/overused, try inverting them to get a whole new sound.

Hi-Lo

yo afrique this is a really awesome thing you've done. personally i've been doing daily piano lessons with the carl humphries book for the last 3 months but this is awesome for ppl who want to get their feet wet, so thank u (u should have gotten way more love for this man, ppl talk all the time about needing to learn keys but about 2% of producers i know ever actually do it).

i was just gonna throw my 2 cents in here...the scales lesson you gave in week one should take everyone way, way more than a week...hell, even more than a few months...if you're trying to get good at piano finger dexterity, speed, and accuracy are real important and scales are so good and building up both of these. if ur wondering how to keep getting better just keep doing those scales day after day and look into the hanon or czerny books, both are great for building quick and strong hands.

Definately. I cannot put into words how important scales are and memorizing the keys inside out. Being capable of spurting out the 6th tone of say Db instantly, the 7th of C etc. While practicing them scales is important, never forget about the playing, because at the end, you want to be playing music, not scales. It would be a killer to practice 1hour playing scales and spend 30mins on a song. Better to use scales as warm up and have the songs as the main.

no doubt, i don't have quite that much time but i do 40 minutes of songs and lessons a day plus 20 of scales or hannons, and i've been making great progress. its definitely important to mix the 2.
