Ladies and Gents, I've been spending more time on Discord, and Ill is now the odd child bookmark I keep open :) I know a lot of you are old as fuck, but what say we create an unofficial Discord? I think Mister @Fade said he was cool with us using the illmuzik logos so long as we add a little bit of special sauce on top.

In all seriousness, I was thinking it could be cool if we try to do expand on the battle idea. I'm part of a few other servers that have pretty consistent freestyle battles and cyphers, so I was thinking we could start by meshing flip this with rap battles and maybe hold events or something where the best beat + best flow + best overall song gets points or something, to also help us network with rappers/singers instead of a bunch of producer fuckers who shit on my mixes. Then release recurring mixtapes or something.

^obviously that takes a little time/thought to put together, so whoever is interested we can collab on how to best set up the servers if we want to see this thing through.

p.s. if I sound grumpy it's because of Fade and the things he's doing down in the basement.

We used to do this on the old myspace hip hop forum, producers would pair up with an emcee, and you would produce battle songs to go against each other.
Of course I won, I did like myspace because they liked me, lol. Things went downhill for independent artists when that went down, beginning of the end IMO.
Myspace was more musically focused. I miss the collaboration and overall shared spirit of creativity and community.
We had it here too, before myspace was even a thing I think. Rappers and beatmakers would collaborate on albums, tracks and generally discuss music production in great detail.
Those were my favourite times in my journey with hip hop, when the community was buzzing with creativity instead of negativity, and hip hop had a good anti establishment edge to it.

I think there is already an unofficial discord

Yeah for sure, just a few things:
  1. Make it unofficial.
  2. Beware of the cat gif guy that was banned from here, unless you want to bore everyone with brainless posts and cat gifs.
  3. Homoerotic gifs are optional but greatly welcomed.
Let me know if you need certain images like the logo.

Keeping it simple for now with 4 channels, where I added illmuzik beat battles as its own channel so we can chat as needed, but the broader server is for beatmakers, focused on crate diggers...
-chat
-crate
-flips
-illmuzik-beat-battles
I don't have a Discord account but this is good though. Maybe I'll create one.

quick housekeeping update:

-about 2 months in and we're at 34 members—feel free to invite to any other crate diggers/producers/music lovers. Even @Fade made it and we welcomed him with some cat GIFs

-for those new to Discord, FYI on the desktop site you're able to search the server, but on mobile it doesn't let me. If you're trying to search for something that has been posted, I've found the desktop/web version of Discord is easier vs. the app

-every crate has heat :fire:

-crates have evolved from the broad genres to some sub-genres, as expected, as we've got more digs to look through. trying to have this essentially be like a digital record store/producer hang out. if something fits more than one crate, feel free to forward (e.g. psychedelic jazz/rock could be posted in both psychedelic-digs and jazz/rock-digs, etc). Soundtracks is prob another that may have more stuff posted in both soundtracks + other

-created a new crate for SFX/Ambience too to avoid it getting meshed together in other/skits

Crate summary (with AI help):

  • classical-digs Orchestral and chamber music + modern compositions
  • drum-digs drum breaks + songs with drum-focused breaks
  • electronic-digs synth/machine-driven music
  • funk-digs often polyrhythmic and defined by a strong, syncopated bassline
  • fusion-digs most commonly combining jazz improvisation with rock, funk, or world music
  • gospel-digs spiritual music rooted in the Bible belt/Baptist church tradition, typically soulful with choir/powerful vocals
  • jazz-digs Improv-centric, focus on harmony, syncopation, and "swing"
  • metal-digs rock distinguished by its aggressive, distorted guitars
  • pop-digs widespead appeal, simple catchy hooks—a catch all for "top 40" type of digs
  • psychedelic-digs often experimental studio effects, "surreal/mind-bending"
  • rock-digs guitar driven, spanning from classic rock to punk and alt
  • sfx-digs for sound fx, ambiences, etc.
  • skit-digs sketches, news clips, movie quotes, commercials, comedy skits, etc. essentially "spoken word"
  • soul-digs melodramatic vocals/heartfelt expression, pre-modern R&B vibes
  • soundtrack-digs scores and song compilations from films, television shows, and video games, etc.
  • other-digs misc crate for other finds (world music, avante-garde, genre defying stuff)

We also have a lab section with channels for free stuff (@OGBama .... that channel is calling your name), channel for mixing chat (@Iron Keys already helped someone fix a snare with phase/stereo issues), music theory chat, and "mind-fucks" for unexplainable music finds....

& of course the CHALLENGES section, where I post about IllMuzik beat battles, + have some other challenges ("dig this" "try this" "flip this").
