1. buy EXTERNAL harddrive with usb2 or firewire support
2. format the hardrive
3. create a folder on the external hardrive called "AUDIO" , "Samples" or wuteva u like
4. copy your old files into that folder then put all your future stuff direct to the external hardrive
5. eat a cookie and have fun. :)

a diffrent option could be saving all your files into dvds or cds.but with the external hardrive u will have faster access and more space and its more save then dvds or cds in long term.(scratches,etc..)

yup, especially considering how inexpensive external hard drives are now ($150 for 320 gig), it's an amazing way to backup all your production work, programs, and songs if you're a mobile DJ.

this is a really important question. backing up is essential. personally i have a large external hd (firewire- don't get usb2 for this) for samples, logic's sample files and instruments, drums, and for saving all of my logic projects and mixes to. i then back up my entire exhd and internal hd with all my applications to dvd...it is a very bad idea to only have an external hard drive as your sole source of backup, because hard drives fail all the time (thats why backups important in the first place, right) so i would definitely backup to dvd and take care of the dvds.

as far as organizing that's all about how you think. one of the things i love about os x is you can sort the finder based on color labels you apply to folders, so on my production external, in my sounds folder, i have things like drum collections or libraries colored one color, commercial audio libraries (big fish, etc) colored another, my personal samples or resamples another, etc...if you have a mac this is a great way to sort things because once you learn your color system browsing through a lot of folders is a breeze.
