dj shadow compiled one of his albums using an mpc60 which is known for having very limited memory. He used tons of samples and found a way to express his ideas even though back then mpc did not come with 128 mb ram and had no zip drives etc.
It´s not about how you do certain things but what you do... Just ´cuz you got an mpc doesn´t mean your beats gonna burn. I think it is about the way you started. I started with a computer and my whole workflow would have to change if i´d switch to hardware. I just prefer sitting in front of 17" monitor instead of a small lcd display. Someone mentioned before that the originals sound better (so far) and I have to agree. I´ve used quite a lot of vsti und dxi plugins but most of them sound quite synthetic. Even the new Edirol editions sounds quite cheesy. I got hold of an akai s2000 for a quite good price and now strings sound like strings and not like the cheap keyoard your parents gave you 10 years ago for christmas. I think the truth lies somewhere in between. I´m not telling anyone how to do it. Do what you think is right and what you can afford. If you´re good you´re good. No matter if you use a triton, mpc, rs2000, sp12 or fruityloops. It´s about the guy who´s behind the machine. I´ve been working with fruityloops for quite a while now and as long as I don´t feel like it´s limiting my possibilities I´ll keep using it. Even if it only costs 99 bucks, looks like a toy and is made for techno (some quotes from hardware users) - I like it and that´s what you all should do: Do and use what you like, use the software/hardware you feel comfortable with. Buy stuff that supports your style and gives you new possibilities and don´t waste too much time thinking and talking about equipment. use it - that´s what it was made for.

I'm not gonna like, most of my best sh-t was the result of a computer and a midi keyboard. Ask any n-gga with an ear to listen and he wont deny to u that im a producer.

Personally. I'm using a pc with Reason 2, ReCycle & Soundforge. Then I'm using a keyboard and the Akai MPD-16 to get the human feel.
Apart from that I have so many sample CD's, refills etc...it's almost to much.
On my second pc I have Pro-Tools LE with M-box and an ok mic to mix and record my songs.
Anyway, this is the perfect setup for me and I wouldn't swith to MPC etc. I've tried the MPC-4000 and other hardware, but it didn't suit me as good. I wíll however agree that VST/DX plugins are not as good as the real thing...but I can work with this in Pro-Tools.
Use whatever suits you and save your money if you feel that is hardware...

Fast PC + Sounds + Software + Midi Controller = A box + computer inside + midi controls + Sounds

Basically all electronic gear is just a computer. Anyway you put it. Now I am a computer technician and I can make a beat as fast a person with hardware. In fact, my friend has a load of gear and I've produce 10 times as many tracks as him.

Why?

Because I'm comfortable with a computer. I know a computer inside and out.

Would I be comfortable with hardware?

Well, Yes, My first keyboard was a Ensoniq TS-12, and I could have a track ready in 5 minutes.

Your Point?

My point is whatever is more comfortable for you is what is best for you. Whatever adds to the creative element, cause messing around with stuff you have no idea how to use, is frustrating and takes away from your creativity. My advice is to learn the basics of electronic music and then you can pretty much be comfortable with anything. Cause Midi ain't changed. Neither has BPM's, ADSR, or Notes on a scale, they are all the same for all gear.

Aight aight...my say on this is this:
Use whatever makes you feel comfortable. I personally have never used any hardware, although I always wanted to. Once I got a pc and loaded up my beat program...I just took off with. If I was to use hardware, the quality of my beats would suffer since am not familiar with the MPC's and such. I would love to learn how to use them though. Anyway, whatever gets you going..use that. One!!
