First, I'm not hating on anyone, I just don't see the answer. What does T-Pain bring to the hip hop game? I just watched a couple of his video's and besides using that mid 80's voice module, I really don't see anything special about him. It's not like he's a great dancer, he's not what you'd call a great singer with an extensive vocal range, so what is it about him that makes him so popular? I'm not even sure if he's what I would refer to as being in the hip hop genre, even that is borderline to me. He's playing dreads like they are still in, he's rocking some silly looking shades all the time, it can't be the look...so what is it?

Remember I'm not hating on the man, I'm always happy to see someone doing better and moving up in the world. It's several others that I ask the same questions about...how did they make it in a game that I see so much more talent still on hold or not even in the mix?

songwriting ability .... its hard to deny that he is a talented writer and producer .. he wrote and produced all the tracks on his first album... he also produced and wrote the current chris brown single and snoops new shit i think too... hes the master of singalong hooks and verses ... his shit aint complex, but its catchy as fuc , which is hard to consistantly do ... you may not like it, but his music has that "everybody can singalong to it, including you mama" type of vibe.... his songs are mad relatable too.... "bartender" was my shit lol... imo theres alot of cats with ALOT less talent than t-pain that deserve threads about them... imo tpain is deserving of the status he has.

didnt know he produced his own first LP, makes me give him more props..
Saw him on BET new years thingy and he CAN actually sing without the voice box, which made me hate him less.
Look somebody has to be the talent all the girls love and he's the guy at the moment.
What he does with it from there,,,, we'll see.

I agree with that Ash!

I'm not saying to mimic the dude but if you're serious about production you really need to take note of what this dude has done an is doing. Let any of his songs come on and watch the wifey and kids get with it. Nuff Said!

Everything doesn't have to be so serious to be good music. Dude just does what he does. He's very very talented IMO. The ladys love his shit and so does the kids....he's not telling us to go out and merk people so I'm all for what he's doing. There's a place for everything under the sun. T-P's iight wit me!

But see it's like you have to justify his being popular, "he produced his first album...", "his songwriting ability", "he produced a chris brown single" are all good attributes but between LDB, Smash Bros., Relic and Stress, you ALL have shown me more talent in the past 6mos. than I've seen in T-Pain's career going back to the Nappy Headz days. Chris Brown has got so much pull that even being associated with him can make you a star so that doesn't get any credibility from me. I agree that coming up with them million dollar hooks is a big plus but still not enough when you look at the big picture imo.

You have answered my question though, I guess my personal standards for making it in the game are above the realistic standards of the industry. I don't think that he will last very long but only time will tell that. Thanks for the help on this.

It's always been that way mate. Think of how many of your favourite artists have really made it as big as Celine Dion or Britney Spears did. It's not right but it's how it is. The majority of people listen to crap, (not saying T-Pain is crap, I haven't heard him but that lightweight catchy shit is what the masses go for).

its not just you dac .. .. i feel that way to brotha ... but i did answer your question ... that IS why he so popular .. because he writes catchy and charismatic shit .. bottom line .. he will be around for awhile . maybe not as an artist but he will always have a future in songwriting and producing thats for sure .. the average listener doesnt listen as deep as us producers so what other people can get down to leaves u wanting more .. its the producers curse...

Glad this thread came up because I had this conversation with a friend.

T-Pain is ill. Kats front on songwriting ability...that is a huge part of being successful.

50 Cent, T-Pain, Akon, Wyclef .... can all write a song with a coherent theme.

I've been listening a lot lately to the aforementioned artists and their success is based on a very simple premise: They write coherent songs with a theme, and every lyric is consistent with that theme.

Hip Hop is at a weird crossroads and in grave danger of losing touch with itself.

People aren't listening to the music anymore.

People will say T-Pain is talentless because he's all over radio and television. When everything dude touches is hot.

Yes, it sucks that the networks and radio act like he's the only person in the world making music nowaday's but it's foolish to hate T-Pain for that.

Rich Boy is the same. It's not his fault his sound is what radio considers hot.... but homie had a real dope album.
But because homie's see him on MTV and hear his shit on commercial radioi they don't even bother to listen.

They just past judgement based on where they're hearing it from.

I hate listening to a song where the rappers babble on about absolutely nothing for 16 bars then have a chorus come in that doesn't connect with any other portion of the song.

If you're writing a song about a woman being strung out on heroin, you shouldn't be mentioning the size of your charm or how ill of a rapper you are. As all three emcee's do on Wu Meets Indie Culture's "Listen" track (it also gives one major insight as to why Planet Asia got dropped from Interscope, homie can write dope verses but can't fit those verses within the theme of a song.

I'm kind of mentoring a younger emcee and I make him write a chorus first before he writes a single word for a verse. Because you have to know where you are going before you get there.

Fans need to get back to making their own decisions and "listen" to music. Sometimes give a record two listens before you make judgement.

When I first heard Royce Da 5'9" "Death Is Certain" I did not like it at all. A few weeks later I listened to it again.... I now consider the album a classic.

Also as aspiring producers/emcees that want to make a living off of music. It's mandatory you keep your ear to everything. Mainstream/Underground anything that people listen to. If there's a fan base you need to pay attention to it. That's a potential market you cuold tap into.

t-pain = nate dogg of 2007

both are/were go to hook guys but sound the same on every damn song, but t-pain is extra annoying. plus, nate dogg stays strapped!

oh, and dude sounded horrible at the hip hop awards without his auto tuner
