My little bro is getting a guitar for his birthday in a few days, any suggestions on a good first guitar for him (electric and not expensive)? Is an electric guitar shit without an amp?

I used to play, and I started out with a Yamaha Pacifica that my cousin gave me, then my parents got me a Fender Stratt for christmas, I don't think that was too expensive. You CAN play it without an amp, but if you want to be able to really hear what you're doing, then get an amp. Only need to get a cheap one too. There's no point getting all the best shit when he's just starting out.
yeah, I was going to say a Fender Strat to... they have off brand electrics that are around $150 that are good for just starting out. If you are getting him an electric I would suggest the amp. They have some that run around $40.00. If you look on ebay, you can find some good deals. When I started I dropped 300.00 on an Acoustic electric, that way I could get the amp later and play it when and wherever i wanted. Later on though, I got a cheap "starter kit" that came with an off brand electric, an amp, a case, and some extra strings for like $140.00... If he is young and you don't want to drop alot I would suggest this option.

It's a Strat clone obviously, but would anyone recommend that? It got good reviews but the people that reviewed it sounded like thats the first guitar they picked up, and the amp is only 10 watts. It looks like a nice begginner set, comes with an amp, chord chart, etc....

i started with a nylon acoustic. very cheap, great sound and easy on the fingers cuz of nylon strings. if you can learn on this first, moving onto electric feels so much easier!

I started on a Nylon as well and it really is one of the easiest guitars to begin on.
You can get nylons very cheap and a lot of them still sound great. I had a Yamaha C-40 and I remember loving how big the sound was from that particular guitar. Plus you tend to get that big warm sound from most classical guitars...
Whats cool about Nylons also is theyre all typically much smaller feeling in your hands when learning to play in comparison to a regular dreadknot so they feel easier to handle as a beginner as well at least IMO.
You can play a Nylon both with a pick and strummed traditionally with your finger tips which actually makes the guitar sound better since thats what they were originally made for - so considering what type of guitar playing you plan to take on is worth thinking about as well.
Thats not to say you cant pluck and strum a steel string by hand but Nylons are actually intended for that type of play.
I had a fender strat as well later on with a old school tube Trainer Amp but my pops had to sell that puppy eventually to make rent one time tho so Im sorry to say i have it no more....No matter tho.
Anyways, those are some things to think about.

I was going to mention that, cause my first was a steel string... and man, my fingers HURT! I use to play till my fingers bled...lol. After sticking to it though playing electric was a piece of cake.

Thats what i was thinking. Only thing, u know some kids just wanna hit the distortion and go, But first you have to learn the instrument.
Used to have a Gibson les paul which was the shit; mibbe a bit expensive for a first guitar.
Have a look at the les paul clones that epiphone make which are pretty nice for the money.
I wouldnt get anyhing too cheap and shitty even for a first guitar. I always regretted getting a squier strat as my first guitar. It was murder to play, to the point it was harder to learn on than something slightly more expensive.

Ended up getting the Squier Strat with the amp, tuner, case, etc.
Dude, well thats a great starter kit. You get everything with something like that. If you wanted to cop a Gibson you would basically just be able to get a Gibson and thats about it besides some strings and shit like that.
My cousin started on that exact kit and he loves it tho.

Yea lol. I was hooked to it for a good hour when I just started playing around with it. It's my little bros but i'm gonna try to teach myself a little, I got the intro of Deep Purple down pretty good so far. Whatever strings I got are not nylon cause my fuckin fingers are all red lol.
Yea man all electrics are steel string. You have to build up calluses in order for it not to hurt anymore, then it just feels normal afterward. That shit will def beat up your fingers at first tho if your not used to it.
You should try learning some scales.....Those are real good for exercising your hands.
