Yo this is kinda in regard to tha previous post that got me thinkin about tha initial step that one should take to try and sell some beats, and of course tha steps that follow. Basically like a mental check list of shit to remeber that can help in tha future...
From what ive already experienced and seen, ive absorbed tha fact that networking seems to be primary and you should also have a general business sense to approach a deal with...So, If thats true - let me go further...How exactly do you go about contacting people and making them yur homies so that they want to rap over yur shit??? Do you jus send out mad numbers uv demos and hope somebody likes tha shit???
Give me your mental check list......All thoughts are appreciated

promote, get your own home studio set up or get another producer to go in half on a spot.......then just advertise that you record, that's a good way to get business, of course you won't just get rappers but I know that the producers on here are well rounded enuff where they wouldn't turn down someone that wants and RNB track....I also do some free promo stuff too...I mean it's about advertising and getting some cliques and camps down with your work...that's it....the people will be coming to you for beats....

First let me define my position and history, I'm selling beats on I guess the lowest level right now so some of the major issue I'm not addressing. I'm just making money to help pay for this sh** and get a name for myself. Some more pro level person my poke hole is all this but I've been getting paid. I'm straight ghetto right now.

These are thing I think help with the presentation of the beat to a rapper

Three things I notice lately is that I sell beats more often if it has a hook, or chorus already in the song. So good writing skills come in handy. You give the artist something to vibe off of. Only a minority of rappers can visuallize a concept , a flow , and chorus all by they self. Another is I like to put an accapella on every other beat for at least one verse On those beats. Its like people feel the beat more if you got a famous voice already on it. I have to get a decent Dj to do this sometimes.

On a beat tape, don't make all the songs to long make them like 1:30, or 24 to 32 bars ,don;t know exactly why but it seems to work.

I breed a rappers enviorment, if its more than three people around I start a cipher, every time somebody see me I got folks in a circle rapping, Then I offer to record anybody who serious or got skills, after that dude hears their voice on tape they get bite by the bug and next thing you know 2weeks ,a month ,or whenever they want to get down. It like drugs, the first few sessions is free , now its charge time baby. i tell them get $100 or $200 and you'll get a CD to walk out the door with. ONce I get my mixing and recording better it will be more. Usually I only part with one or two of my own beats. I set out the green and the drink to set the mood for a good time.and record the whole thing. Just get out and in the mist, like you said and network. I deal with anybody on any budget right now. Everybody wanna rap these day, so I offer to put them on their own Cd for like a 100 or two and they love that. Save your super heat for the more serious folks. The little young drug dealers in my old neighborhood will pay you just to put they voice on cd, most time they wanna rap over some Lil John insturmenttal or whomever and I charge them for that and my beats like a combo package. Don't go crazy about your prices right now. I've haven't total figured out how to get to that next level yet. BUT KEEP A CD WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. I had a chance meeting with a big name guy who was jsut farming for beats for him and his crew and I didn't have nothing but my dick in my hand. That may have been my chance. . But I think as my music grows their will be a nautral progression. Somebody I sold a beat to may get a little name and look out.. So make good relation with all. Keep the heat going. In the meantime , learn about publishing and the legal aspect of selling music so when that serious business come along you got your head right. Copywrite your stuff so a biter at least has to put in work to twerk your music. You don't have to wait for it to come back to start selling those beats.

basically I just hook up with lables or the artist on the lable I hunt them down at clubs somewhere and tell them man I got some hot shit you might like come to my studio or lets go in the truck and listen to somethin right quick. that shit works for me all the time. I'm stingin them in Houston Tx like that. If you don't have a name around your spot hit em up for 3 to 4 hundred to get your name out teir but if you got a name no less than a g for real

i really aint understand what kojak was sayin but it aint easy to locate niggas in ny, i have however happen to run into a lot of famous cats but that was before i started producing, i been involved with this hip hop project program in new york for about a year and its basically a program for youth and from what ive been into so far, i have to agree that it is all about networking now, but u gotta be aggressive.plus its a small world, you wouldnt believe how easy it is to call these cats, dial information get the numbers, online people finder, its a small world yall.

Whatup peeps,

There's some good real ideas here and I think that there are many ways to achieve you goal of hooking up with rappers and selling beats. My advice would be;
1. Define your desired goal/result - e.g. do you want to find and MC or crew to produce for and be a part of or do you just want to sell beats to them. Get clear about what YOU want to achieve.
2. Speak to and get to know cats around your way (hood, school, city whatever) who rap and let them know that you make beats. Find one or two cats you want to work with and hook up with them. Come to an agreement on how much and how they will pay for beats and then go ahead and make music with them
3. Keep in touch with the people you work with and ask them to recommend your services to other rappers they know.
4. Repeat the above process to the point where you are selling beats on a regular basis. Before long you'll hopefully have a decent name for yourself and a good catalog of beats you've sold. Then you might try to get at some record labels if you want to take it to that level.

good luck

I think goldeneyeoutlaw offers some well placed advice.

Keep in mind that production competition is fierce today more than it ever was before. The utilisation of social networks is a quick way to attempt to sell beats for money. However, are you spending your time attempting to achieve the most efficient way in getting in a network?

I believe it takes a small sacrifice on the part of the beatmaker. I highly suggest that anybody interested donate time at a studio in order to meet people directly related to their field of interest. With that, social connections arise. Don't be too hungry however, many individuals like a level-headed accomplice in production, rather than your run-of-the-mill industry smooth talker. Also, be timely, and make your productions run on time, preferably before a deadline.

For many people it is too early in the game to go get on a label list. Politics usually win out, but talent is always regarded, especially when it is recognised that a production is definitely good.

Weigh all this. However, I highly suggest a method of trying to find a way through the door and into a studio or perhaps even a record label.

That way you'll learn the game, and what you've believed was smoke and mirrors. Money and power have a lot to say in who is promoted at a label and what production house is used for an album or track.

Sincerely,
God

Sellin beats is hard. The main thing is the price. It would kill you to sell a beat for 500 and give them all rights. Then theyget big and u get no credit and ur left wit nuthin cause u spent the 500 on a new mic

thats true............but it depends on how serious you are about getting somewhere, plus its rear to sell beats expensive...............only the people who are serious about hip hop would pay for beats with that much money but theres not enough of them around.

hey Deuce, i'm askin myself the same question these days one of the best answers i've came up with is gettin a business card and a website, put the website on the card and promote your website put everythin you want people to know about your business of sellin beats on the site give them the option to buy your shit online. Here i'll give u a link to this site i jus made for me, it needs hella work cuz i gotta figure out a better method for sellin my beats on the site without havin them send the money to my house and me sendin the beat to em u know what i mean, somthin more proffesional. THats just one way of getting your name out probly not the best way I'd have to agree with everyone and say its all about networking

heres the link

Sorry, no links to your site. Please put it in your signature if you want to promote it.

Thanks.

Ooooh, Fade is cold. Regardless, this is a very helpfull thread. Now a question for thread, later on i would like to advertise my beats on this website for both monetary prospects and critique how would i do this?
